Eggs! I am sure to have one of the cochins go broody very soon. Whats the longest time they HAVEN'T been broody? 3-4 weeks at my house, maybe???

anyway, I'd love, love, love some eggs! I am done with this brooder thing--too stinkin' hard! Mama cochin totally knows what she is doing, whereas I am fumbling like an idiot...and never a sick chick, nor poopy butt, nor flock integration issue when mama does the job! Here is one of my sister duo of mamacita cochins with the Splash Marans chicks...and see? They even get piggy back rides!

Mahonri and Dawn, Love the broody moms with chicks!! It is the best way to raise them, just not always the best for scheduling, but it will help keep the chicken math in check!!

zekki, I have four foot fence around my "ranging yard" and have the occasional "escapee" but they general stay put. I have had a cockerel fly over my 6 foot chainlink enclosure to get into the ranging yard when another flock (Auburn Javas) was having their turn there. I was working in the coop when the two cockerels got into it and I walked over and broke them up and returned Audun to his girls. He has stayed put since then. Our property is 215 feet wide, by 895 long, so the neighbors on either side aren't too far away. I, too, worry about them traveling but so far so good.

Chores, then church. Prayers will be said today for those down south suffering.

I am going to be using extended chain link dog kennels with netting over the top, hawks and owls here, as well as coons, will run chicken wire or something along the bottom 2' or so for coons. Too many stray dogs and coyotes around here for less. Both the entry section and the rear end will have tarp on the top and the sides for sun and wind protection, roosts in the rear end section. I am also going to be building separate pair/trio coops, and one for individual roos, this winter will keep over most all of the roos.I am hoping to keep 18-20 hens and 3-4 roos.
