Icelandic Chickens

Yep, my yard looks like a chicken exploded. Thankfully nothing extreme. But the yard is a mess.

Fourteen birds left this morning with farmer Fred including my big roo, Pretty Boy. Fray Baby went too. That was sad. And two roos from Lukka's babies and ten white Icelandic juveniles. I am not sure where my numbers are now but I plan to do a count tonight when I close the coops. I will be looking for at least one, maybe two new roos so I will watch as they grow out and pick the best. I can't believe the difference this morning having Pretty Boy in a crate in the garage. Isi and Little Man each crowed once and that was the end of it. Pretty Boy stalked the girls and jumped them from out of nowhere so everyone had a tendency to hide. I noticed a lot of looking around this morning when I opened the screen door and let them out. I think they expected he would jump on them from around the corner. Now everyone is chillin' out in the open free ranging. Much better this way.

The 5 Icelandic eggs due to hatch yesterday all hatched. Two chipmunk and three various shades of white/blonde. They are spoken for. I have eight more due to hatch tomorrow or Thursday. I can't remember what time I set them. If they hatch tomorrow they will be shipped but if not until Thursday it wouldn't be safe. I'll sell them locally if the lady who is taking these five doesn't want them. All I know for sure is THEY AREN'T STAYING HERE! I guess I'll have to set some more for the lady that wants shipped chicks. Arghh.........I really, seriously want these incubators shut off! Unless my Isbars start laying!

I have been paring down too.

We processed two turkeys and sent a third to a friend as a thank-you for this job (it is lunch break).

Sunday I sent 4 chicks/teenagers and 5 roosters off to a BYCer's house. 2 were Icelandic roos (1 of dubious origin), so now my Icelandic flock is down to 1 Icelandic rooster and his flock of ladies.

...I suppose I should count too, but I am afraid I will have more than I think I have. Again.

Nifty started a worst molt contest. I think my buttercup has it in the bag.

In all the years I've had chickens, none of mine have ever molted. Ever.

Hey Kelly, quite a little storm last night, huh? I have a bit of cleanup to do today. Michael was working on an irrigation pump cover on the front patio and had plywood, sheet metal, etc out there. The wind picked that stuff up and blew it round. We were out there in the middle of the night battening down the hatches after a half sheet of plywood became airborne. What a mess. I hope my Isbar babies are ok. I pushed a piece of foam core into the front opening to keep the rain out. I am going out to check now.

Crazy storm last night. It woke me up at 2:30 with the wind knocking the trees around. I could hardly get my gate open to the orchard due to the mud. That's when I heard it - Moose would crow, then a higher pitched crow - so I now have a crowing hen. When I opened the coop door to find out who it was, they just looked at me.
