Icelandic Chickens

Oh gosh the pictures are cracking me up!

I re-homed two of my goats day before yesterday so I decided to clean the goat shelter yesterday. I found forty (40) rotten eggs hidden in straw, buried in the alfalfa dust at the bottom of the goat feeder, and inside of cement blocks! I know understand how the guys feel who strip the landmine fields.

I was praying while making my way to the trash.

And all last summer The Sheriff was wondering.. "Hmm... why don't my Icelandics lay?"

Shawn, Is that your first Icelandic egg? I like your nest boxes. I will need to add a couple to the former Bachelor Pad coop that will become the Dreki "love shack" on Feb. 12. He will be moving to a separate coop with certain pullets to make sure Mahonri gets Dreki eggs for the Easter Hatchalong. I have two milk crates in the barn that I think I'll use.

Mary, Those girls can find the most out-of-the-way places to lay....now you know where to look!!

How are the hatches going, everyone?

Lunch is over, back to work.............

Can't wait to put those Dreki eggs in the bator on March 17th.

9 chicks out. (first one died) Most from my coop. Post office did a number on the WMR eggs. 4 of the 8 survivors are Olive Eggers. I so hope they are all pullets.

2 pips currently. 11 without pips or movement.

All of mine hatched. Fourteen Icelandics (one probably won't survive) and 2 mutts that I set from the hook-up of my Cream Legbar roo and my frizzled cochin Phyllis! Here's the happy couple:

Here are all the babies. The buyer is getting a good selection.

Nice variety there, Mary!

Mahonri, what is WMR ?

Congratulations on the new chicks! My hatch is just starting. I have 1 Delaware and 2 New Hampshires out, and I see lots of pips. I am worried the humidity is too low.

Here they are...

Other wheaten Am is not hiding in this one.

The one on the UL of the pic is the other OE...3/4 Am 1/4 Wheaten Marans... notice the feathers on it's feet?

And some of my New Years Day chicks enjoying some fresh cut broccoli from my garden.

I had the oddest thing happen. One of my Icelandics hatched with a ruptured yolk sac! The poor thing had dried yolk on it's head and the rest of it is covered in wet yolk. I don't think it will make it but it is sure trying. What a mess. There was only the tiniest bit of blood, all the rest was yolk.

Other Mary.. No I think this was number 6 and number 3 from this pullet.. I have liked the milk crate nest boxes so far. I saw someone on BYC had made some and then I had the opportunity to get a half dozen milk crates for free so it was a no brainer. This one in the Icelandic pen is a long rectangle, so I divided it into two. Probably wouldn't work for the bigger hens but the size seems good for the Icelandics..

Kathy,

WMR= White Mountain Ranch here on BYC... Lives near San Dieggo and raises W/BW Ameraucanas.

She has the son of Geoffrey as one of her Blue Wheaten Roos and he is a REAL gorgeous bird... SQ imo.

So for the Easter Hatch I'll have eggs from NotaFarm -The Other Mary, More from WMR and some from Peachick.
