I'd like to know the breed

Anyway hi lots a cluckin you helped me a lot you know your chickens! You're really helpful!

No problem!!

Once I knew the chicken was a Silver Spangled Hamburg, it was so easy to find pictures identifying it. The hatcheries should give information on the free bird that is sent.
Would this be considered a bantam? The search I just did shows that the roosters get to about 5 lb. That would be a very big bantam, wouldn't it?

Thanks I have learned everything I know from BYC and other various websites. Just read and you will gain a better knowledge about chickens I have only owned chickens for 18 months but I started reading and learning about them months before I bought them

It looks like a bantam in the picture... A small bantam at that! I'm surprised its not a bantam!

I have owned chickens for six years! I have never come across that breed? Is it rare?

they are not very rare but they are also not too common....there is about 5,000 of them in the U.S and about 10,000 world wide...they are a heritage breed and most heritage breeds are harder to find than others such as an amerucana.

Ok thank you, I was thinking of getting one but since they are a little bit rare, no. I don't get rare chickens, I can't breed them, because I've already got 18 in my garden and I can't fit many more!

I guess I should have mentioned that this Silver Spangled Hamburg is just 12 weeks old, so he will get much bigger. Right now he is about 2 3/4 lb.
If I end up keeping him, I'd like a couple hens for hatching out eggs.

You have a large fowl (not bantam) Silver Spangled Hamburg. It seems as though they are very common Mcmurray "mystery chicks". I've seen at least three other people on BYC that have gotten a Hamburg for their mystery chick.
