Recently, one of my chickens, a female jersey giant has not been coming home to her coop at night. I noticed that my female Welsummer had blood coming out of her neck and was feeling depressed. I later went out into the middle of the lawn and found raccoon dung and bloody black feathers all around. I am wondering - could a chicken survive and raccoon attack? I could not find her entire body (all I could find was the bloody feathers and the dung,) but she has been able to survive outside her run for several days before. Is she dead or just hiding?

Well, if she's been missing for a few days she might have been taken by a raccoon.

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

Sorry for your missing girl. :barnie

Raccoon are vicious predators that often eat the head off. I did have a duck escape once, scalped but alive... immediately.

Chickens have been known to hide out for a while before returning. But I wouldn't have my hopes high. If so it will be daytime and if you don't have your other birds locked up that sneaky little BLEEP will be back for another easy meal. :(
