andehens and PC, I think this is the real thing. Most of the threads I see are from new chicken owners. I guess I haven't been around long enough to get tired of the endless new shocked owners who have lost their flocks or parts of. I was one also being after a pack of coons. However, I did shoot and I did trap and they are gone. I reinenforced my coop and still have more plans. I lost chickens and my HOMESCHOOL kids were right there with me learning that hard lesson. We were all mad more than anything, but the point being they understood why - the coop had two holes we didn't see. My son even took care of one of the coons for me. So, moral is I guess I still have compassion for the newbies and understand some of them are not use to Country life and the amount of livestock verses deadstock that happens. That alone can be enough to run a newbie out of the hobby. I have seen it many times in horses/dogs/cats and even our little guinea pigs. My compassion for the newbies who are in shock is to hopefully encourage them to continue and learn that hard life lesson.

Thanks everyone for keeping my thread peaceful.

I have learned today that I should help any newbies strengthen their
coops to prevent losses.

The intent of my thread was never to infer anyone was dumb or
irresponsible, except dog owners who don't take care of their animals.

i have 10x10 chain linked fence dog kennels for some of my birds,, and YUP their dog proof,,, and if a dog does get in,, then its 1 hell of a dog !! hehe,, even out here where EVERYONE knows i'll shoot their dog if its on my property,, i STILL know that there WILL be a dog get in here,, and i prepared for that.and not ALL loose dogs are from idiot owners,,,,, like my before post,, there will always be a rogue dog,, some dogs RUN out an open door when the owner is walking through with bags of groceries,, there will ALWAYS be a kid that didnt close the dog pen all the way,,,,,,,,,,,,,, common sense = be prepared,, its not always the other persons fault,,,, we DO have accidents, and things do happen out of our control,, so,,, do ya duty and protect ya birds any way possible,,,,, if it happens on YOUR land ( even if its someone elses loose dog) its YOUR responsibility.



EDIT: ta say,,, i have walked dogs back to their owners a GOOD many times,,, theres an old school teacher lady that has a hound that gets out about once a week, he tries to get to my birds,, and i go out, tie her up,, and walk her back home,,, this old lady has all she can do to see outside,, let alone fix her MANY holes in her fence,,,, i KNOW this dog will be here,,,, so if i leave a gate open for him to get in and eat my birds,,,,, AGAIN,,,,MY FAULT

i completely agree!
if i were to let my 3 year old outside to play by herself and she got hit by a car, or bitten by a dog etc i would bet my life that the police wouldn't allow the "its not my responsibility to watch everyone else's cars, dogs etc" argument.
part of having animals is making sure to protect them in any way we can.
