A few days ago I went out to the nesting box and found an enormous egg. The below image really does not do this egg justice.

Even more startling was what was inside this shelled beauty. I've seen my fair share of double yolkers and I think I've even heard of a triple yolker. But, I have never heard of this: a double yolker and an entire shelled egg inside this magnificent monster of an egg.

Has anyone else seen this before? What causes this to happen?

WOW! I have never heard of this before! I think your hen's "cycle" got a tad bit confused that day...eek!! She's okay??

I have an Ameraucana hen who needs sitz baths after she lays her eggs that are about that big! They do weird things sometimes while they are trying to get their systems operating smoothly. No shelled eggs within an egg though. Just double or triple yolkers.

just think if that egg was hatchable

I've heard of eggs with another egg inside...But not with double yolkers and another egg!!! Did you crack the inner egg?

My barred rock has done this twice within just a few weeks. My son loved it he got double the scrambled eggs. Both egg were gigantic.

Wow!

That is really neat!!! I've had an egg in an egg from one of my girls but the inner egg was tiny.
