If I have to....

yes it so cold here today the kids are still out of school we got about 4to6 inch of snow it still on the lawn where we did not walk i thought when i moved here in tn we would only see snow one day and wake up the next day and see a brown lawn again. what i did before the snow came was i put 5 1 gal milk jug fill of water in the and empty the water when i open the door. but it is 23 out now

All I need is, electric to all the coops, about 150 extention cords, and all those heated bowls.
Might be cheaper just to have more kids to help tote buckets.

I hear they are cheaper by the dozen but I've not been brave enough to test that theory.

OK, hubby used cookie tins I got at wally half price after Christmas, a socket/bulb adapter, a 40 watt bulb, and an extension cord.

You put the bulb in the adapter, plug it into the cord, put it in the tin (he bent a side over instead of cutting a hole. much easier and no caulking involved. he put electrical tape around the lid to keep moisture out) and plug it in.

He tested it with a completely frozen hog bowl of water and it thawed it overnight so they could drink it in the morning.

Gritsar, we have more than enough to share. Three times a day is truly getting old. Bust the ice out and provide fresh water each AM, bust ice at noon so they can drink, fresh water again in the PM, and I'm getting tired of the dirty looks blaming me for the "solid water."

Since my chickens live entirely non-electric AND about 4 miles from my house, I have to drive out there with water no matter what the roads look like. Fortunately, they weren't bad this time around.
Hot water once a day seems to be doing the trick IF you keep the water buckets in the sunshine. If it skims a bit, they do peck through it.
I have to take them water at least every other day anyways, so the snow/ice just makes it "funner"

ETA: my brooder chicks in a doghouse in my back yard with a lamp are doing ok. I put their water inside the dog house and it even had some ice in it this morning - it was COLD last night. The chicks were all running around though, with 8 of them in there plus the lamp they seem to be making enough heat to stay warm. I check on them frequently.

I just got in from giving everthing some liquid water. Now my hands feel like blocks of ice. It's just not right for it to be this dang cold down here. I'm going out and do some polluting. I vow to single handedly bring back global warming if these temps don't start rising.

Got some kids I can borrow? Putting up with the little monsters (not yours personally, just kids in general) might be worth it. Just got back in from doing the evening hot water run. Also, chased a silkie outta a snow pile again. What IS it with those funky little birds???

As much as a tree hugger as I am, I'll still volunteer to help you increase the global warming. This is ridiculous!
