With great sadness, I'm here to share that our dear sweet Bubbles died yesterday. She was starting to molt and looked slightly off. Then a big, young cockerel decided she was easy pickings to mate. (He had a bad habit of jumping on any weak hen or young pullet. He's in the freezer now.) He took Bubbles by surprise & injured her. Her comb quickly went from pink to dark purple. She couldn't stand & laid on her side trying to catch her breath. About an hour later, she was walking around & coming out of shock. I was hopeful when I saw her eat, drink, & even spend some time outside with the flock. She lived for a few days but must have had some unseen injury. With all the mischief in that little hen, I'm so surprised that a rooster was her cause of death. i can't begin to describe my sadness over the loss. She will be missed by not only her family & friends, but by 300+ school children who look forward to seeing her at school presentations, parades, & special events. Bubbles was a very special girl.

I am so sorry Faraday :hit... she was beautiful
yes those darn cockerels have injured some of mine in the past. A cx I was going to keep for breeding had her hip dislocated. He went in the freezer too

funny one time... the same cockerel that later injured the cx above, decided the BBB jennie was a good match... he was one that jumped on them from 3 ft up.. he landed on the bbb turkey and she was horrified... he hung on for about 30 sec before she got him off her... he was use to the pullets running but she turned around and grabbed him and wouldn't let go. when he finally got away she chased him for a good half hour :gighe didn't learn anything though.

I don't post very often but had a really tough day. We lost almost 1/2 of our flock today. 5 confirmed dead and 3 missing. The worst part about it was it was my own dog that killed them. I should have been more careful. The chickens and dog have free ranged together for almost two years with no problems not sure what happened to change that. My dog has killed several possum and coons this year and I was feeling good that she was keeping the birds safe. I trusted that she new the birds belonged. Just sad.

Sorry I too have had cockerals hurt pullets or hens on occasion. Still not as good as the mature rooster that attacked my dog, a sheltie,(I later found punctures from his spurs under her thick coat-thankfully not deep but she's been wary of the chickens since) at the time he attacked her I was working on removing wood we are saving from an outbuilding that is coming down. So the first attack I missed but the dog was upset I thought the hammer noise upset her. The second time I turned as he lunged I chucked the hammer it hit him and knocked him to the ground. Since then DH2B has been calling me Thor. LOL

Normally something I wouldn't do you don't attack the dogs that's a one way ticket somewhere mighty cold. He was the first bird I ever did the entire slaughtering process myself on from kill to freezer. I had done everything but the killing before that.

Oh I'm so very very sorry. What kind of a dog do you have? I hope you find your missing birds.

Not sure she is a mid size mix. We got her from the shelter as a puppy. She is a good dog for the most part. I just won't be able to let them out together again.
I am thinking about getting some day old chicks this week. Is it to late in the season? I was thinking by December if I picked them up this month they would be 4 months and hopefully could handle the winter. I do not heat the coop

so sorry for your loss.
I trained my dog with a shock collar. I got him from the shelter at 3 yrs old. He was turned in because the husband died and the widow couldn't handle him. He would chase and kill if he caught the wild turkey, hawks, morning doves, coons, possums, skunks ect. and try to drag me across the yard. He is 110lbs.
I have had hatches as late as halloween do well, the thanksgiving hatch did get frostbite feet and lost toenails.
The juvenile hawks tend to be bad my me in oct/nov and the sept/oct hatches are the prefered size for them.

I agree I think you should definitely be able to get chicks but I would keep an eye on them in cold weather if it comes early. They would then start laying in the spring probably and many people get chicks for just that reason.

They should be okay. Is your coop insulated at all? They will be able to huddle for warmth if it gets cold.

Sorry again about your dog. That is my only hesitation when we get another dog. We want to adopt but I would hate to get a dog and find it was aggressive towards my other animals. We will absolutely adopt though.

Our ladies have been laying very well. 3 of them at least. I think one of the brahmas started laying a bit earlier than expected. That or my marans' eggs are lighter than expected. I haven't been able to figure out which is the third layer. Our Speckled Sussex and GLW are laying excellently though. We always have eggs in the fridge now.
