Illinois...

So sorry for your losses.
Any plans to add some ventilation
I had been asking for a year. Shame it took a tragedy to get it to get done.

My survivors. Doing better. Perching, eating and chirping again.

I need a lid like that. Once mine started flying out last time, I took a screen out of a window and weighted it with a book because I am super fancy like that. 😁😆😂 But with the last batch I had an in between "toddler" coop they stayed in between the brooder and the coop. This time they have to go straight to the coop so I'm thinking my screen is not going to fly long term. 😂

Window screen has worked great for me .

Also I am sure you chickeners know this but in this video the lady shows how to hold a chicken to calm it and its awesome. It's like a suppository..... or sedative whichever word works for you

I have another layer!! That makes 5 of the teenagers laying now. Only ones left are the Russian Orloff who still doesn't look ready and one of the Wyandottes that I think should have already started but she's been regrowing feathers all summer so I'm guessing that's why (or part of why) she's not. She's looked ready for a while now and I would have guessed she'd start before the other Wyandotte did but I guess that's chickens for ya!

Dumb question: what do you all do about mice and voles? A bunch have recently moved into my shed (or recently became more obvious anyway) so I put some of those Tomkat baits around the shed and garage. Well it never occurred to me that if a mouse eats the poison and my chickens or dogs eat the mouse before it dies, they could get secondary poisoning. Is that true? Better option? I usually just let the mice be because my dogs will kill any of them they see before I see them. I think it was worse this year because they're trying to get at all my chicken feed/treats (which are in plastic sealed canisters) so they mess with my gardening stuff now instead and they never bothered it much before.
Mouse traps. Place many and check them daily. I bait with peanut butter.

When we bought our property 20 years ago, we had gray and fox squirrels. Black squirrels have shown up in the last 5 years. I don't know if someone brought them in (they have been in Mendota for some time) or if they came about naturally. There is plenty for them to eat with our oak and hickory trees...and the hazelnuts I planted that they think are great.
It is hard to get a good picture since the barn cats or puppy are out whenever I am but here are a couple from this morning.
