Illinois...

I've heard people say if spurs get too long you can just break them off. Any input on this?
I think it will fall off on its own. I did see peeps crack off the spurs, and the quick is left somewhat soft skinned. I don't have the huevos to do such. If it looks like it dries, and is just hanging by some dead tissue, sure, just clip it of with some wire cutters, or nail clipper.
I recall how a couple of my Cochins would loose their toes one at a time. First it would crack,, then dry up, and then crack off. :hit There was no remedy for it in my flock. I no longer desire to keep that breed. Maybe that breed was not designed to live as long as they lived by my coop. Developed osteoporosis:idunno

Lots of photos today.

The hens we're given a winter snack of squash. It's a winter squash cross of some kind that volunteered itself in our garden from hybrids seeds that were composted (not well apparently). Not good eating for us, but the birds live them and I'm sure it's full of carbs too help warm the up with the incoming winter storm. I tossed some pumpkin seeds on top too since I cleaned a pumpkin to bake. Hopefully it will be good for a pie. The one without pumpkin went to the ducks. Not sure they'll eat this, but we will see.

@Molpet's not too far...... but we're predicted to get a lot more.
Too bad snow days are a thing of the past (due to remote learning).
