My chickens have white earlobes but it looks like they are turning red,is this a sign they will lay eggs soon?they are 24 weeks.
In summer, I'd say, "Yes, absolutely, depending on the breed." But as the daylight is getting shorter, and not knowing what breeds you have..... you might have to wait til spring, even with fully mature hens.

Are you getting the "submissive squat" when you reach to pet them? Or, if you have a rooster, are they getting some action from those hens? Those are also indicators.

My Marans hen has bright red wattles and comb and ears, at 31 weeks, but no squatting, and no exploring of the nest boxes. As they say in Game of Thrones, "Winter is coming." It's not looking good for any eggs out of her til spring.

Not like we're getting swamped with eggs got to talk about something lol! BTW kids i do not recommend cooking anything if there is even the slightest chance the ingredients for mimosas are in the house...just a thanksgiving public service announcement.
Ha ha! That's the only way that we survived several holidays with my mom -- keep the mimosas flowing!

My Sweetie is off to his family thanksgiving today without me -- yippee! (see the: Dry turkey, wicked MIL, and canned spinach from earlier posts, those of you just joining us). My son and I will be barbecuing tri-tip and whipping up the margaritas soon.

Might go for a walk in the woods before the rain starts up again, but it's sooooo cozy and quiet right now. Hard to hoist self from the recliner.

So thankful, on this false Thanksgiving, that I'm NOT with in-laws. Bliss.

No submissive sqaut, they are easter eggers.they have been going in the nesting boxes.I do have one rhode island red who has bright red wattles comb and all no submissive squat.well if I have to wait till spring I guess so be it.I just want an egg so bad..

I only have one hen that does the squat -- she's an EE, the smallest of the flock and lowest on the pecking order. The RIR, BPR, BO and 1 more EE do not do the squat and all are laying now.

Thanks, CC! It was the usual mishmash of family horrors, not too much drama this time.

<I'm probably violating some cross-posting BYC rules, but I am too tired (lazy!) to resummarize, so I'm copy/pasting from the Squatchwatchers thread.>

Some highlights from the day:

I cooked a crapload of food. Turkey and ham (even though I don't eat meat, I still know how to cook it) and a ton of other stuff. Roasted brussels, garlic roasted smashed redskins, stuffing, biscuits, smashed turnips, deviled eggs, spinach dip etc.....yum. Beeyatch knows how to throw a party!

My mom--who is disabled and has a pill problem--rolled up in her jazzy with my sis and her clan from Delaware, with three burnt-to-a-crisp pies. Cuz she fell asleep on the toilet while baking them. I shizz you not.

My very proper, old lady SIL and MIL stated how MOIST the ham was. Oh my lord, did the conversation degenerate from there. It was a veritable MOISTFEST for probably the next, oh, 20 minutes or so. Lol!! My fam is tres inappropriate, and the hubs' is very old, old-school Italian. Much hilarity ensued.

I brought a chicken in the house. My family (who are all staunch animal lovers) had no idea of the coolness and excellence of pet chickens. I schooled them. I brought in Flower, my MFD, and my niece and my mom could not stop cuddling her. They couldn't believe how sweet and docile and content she was to sit in their laps, making her sweet little chickeny noises. The MIL and SIL looked a little horrified, but oh well!

We put a lock on our bedroom door so my one sister's weird ass BF wouldn't pass out on our nice bed with his stanky feet and greazy homeless self, like he did last time. He came, he stuffed himself with ten pounds of food, never said hi or bye or thank you or that was good, and passed out with his stanky feet on the couch. Me and my other sister (who is evil) took stealth pictures of him and made snarky memes out of them.

My nephews got a kick out of feeding the chooks lots of leftovers in their runs. It was their first Thanksgiving! It was great watching them play keep away with pieces of turkey (which struck me as a mite bit cannabalistic, but oh well!)

It was a lot of cooking and alot of cleaning and a lot of furniture rearranging, but it was worth it. A good time was had by all!

And I have pictures. :D
