I would worry more about the roo's food if layer was all he got but he's out scratching around on an acre, he gets seeds, raisins, peanuts and anything he can snatch from me and the flock crumbles/layer mix is 50/50. If that boy somehow manages to eat enough layer to do himself in its just meant to be lol! I tried to do the whole feed them seperate stuff, that's absolutely impossible. :)
Sounds like you had your own personal Westside Story going on out there. Glad the hawk had a chipmunk out there to keep it busy. I bet the chickens were all waiting to see if they could get a bit of it.

:yuckyuck

I was told that even though I have 2 boys to not bother buying them special food b/c it won't hurt them that much. BUT I had read that the calcium would hurt them. I've tried flock raiser and meat bird feed, but the store by me only has those in crumble and it seems my big boy likes the pellets and looks at me like he's starving while he stares at a bowl full of crumble. I was buying feather fixer, but it's $18 for a 40 lb bag as opposed to $14 for a bag of pellet layer feed. I also mix crumble w/ pellets, but I have a couple bantams and I'm not sure the little one could handle the pellets... she probably can though & I'm being over protective of her. I agree... it is stupid that the layer feed has lower protein. I was told that my production layers (tetra & amber browns) required higher protein to lay production numbers. If I could find it cheaper I'd buy the higher protein, but I don't see any increase in laying with it and they seem happy enough w/ the layer feed. I give them some warm mash in the morning and occasionally mix in some egg, but that's more to warm them up in the morning after a cold night.

My roo was lucky he wasn't getting anti-freeze after the way he treated me. We could have had our own Dateline episode.

Your liquor store sounds alot like heaven.
Mine are 30 weeks or older, some laying, some not -- they all get the layer feed that they sell (wait for it.......) at the Liquor Store! I know! One stop shopping out here! I get my stove pellets, my rabbit pellets, and my layer pellets (plus nicotine pellets and liquid alcohol pellets), Costco toilet paper, almost at cost, all in one place. You can even rent a U-haul truck there. There are local farmers who sell their eggs at the Liquor Store (the store takes $.25, the rest goes to the farmer).

Small town living.

Omg,a drive thru? I would abuse the crap out of that! I don't like my liquor store, they're judgy you can just see it in their faces and lord help you if you need smokes too! I go to this little Indian man for those now,he's cheap and he doesn't care. :)
I know, they even have a drive-thru portion, for when I'm especially hair/outfit challenged. They do run out quickly of things, so I act fast when I see the layer pellets I need. They are cheaper than the feed store (45 miles away) too!

That sounds like my kind of place. I'm so not one of those people who will drive around hell and back to buy stuff. I want everything in one place. IDC what people say, I love Walmart b/c I can usually get everything in one place.

LOL I had a run in w/ my boy the other day. I grabbed him and tossed him into his time out cage. He looks at me like I'm the problem. It's funny b/c sometimes he's an absolute doll, then other times he's a huge turd.

Lol! The only bad thing mine is doing is making nests the inside of my coop looks like a dang golf ball. I'm tempted to give the weirdo an egg to hatch. I can't really scold him for it so maybe a kid would break him.

I'm the liberal newbie city slicker in a tiny logging town, judgement was passed on me pretty early! Needless to say, I'm not getting invited to join any volunteer committees anymore..... :) Whatever will I do without the endless string of "It's a potluck!" invitations?

Yes, love the liquor store that is our Costco/Walmart/Tractor Supply -- and my chickens are really good company (look how we've circled back to the Introvert conversation!!!).
