RIP 1975-2022
I would worry more about the roo's food if layer was all he got but he's out scratching around on an acre, he gets seeds, raisins, peanuts and anything he can snatch from me and the flock crumbles/layer mix is 50/50. If that boy somehow manages to eat enough layer to do himself in its just meant to be lol! I tried to do the whole feed them seperate stuff, that's absolutely impossible.

Sounds like you had your own personal Westside Story going on out there. Glad the hawk had a chipmunk out there to keep it busy. I bet the chickens were all waiting to see if they could get a bit of it.
I was told that even though I have 2 boys to not bother buying them special food b/c it won't hurt them that much. BUT I had read that the calcium would hurt them. I've tried flock raiser and meat bird feed, but the store by me only has those in crumble and it seems my big boy likes the pellets and looks at me like he's starving while he stares at a bowl full of crumble. I was buying feather fixer, but it's $18 for a 40 lb bag as opposed to $14 for a bag of pellet layer feed. I also mix crumble w/ pellets, but I have a couple bantams and I'm not sure the little one could handle the pellets... she probably can though & I'm being over protective of her. I agree... it is stupid that the layer feed has lower protein. I was told that my production layers (tetra & amber browns) required higher protein to lay production numbers. If I could find it cheaper I'd buy the higher protein, but I don't see any increase in laying with it and they seem happy enough w/ the layer feed. I give them some warm mash in the morning and occasionally mix in some egg, but that's more to warm them up in the morning after a cold night.
