I tried finding a better copy of it, to no avail. Sorry. :( I'm sure i just found it by a google search.

Speaking of frostbitten combs, one of my serama dudes has been brought inside because his was so bad. He will lose alot of it. And also because i have Honey inside. She was having a little respiratory issue, but has cleared up. Didn't want to take her back out in the cold, after getting used to being indoors, so I brought him in with her.
His name is Spicoli.

Check out his little crow, if you can call it that! Lol

Poor little Spicoli -- no fun having frostbite. I'm glad he's getting to come spend time in the house with you and Honey :love His little crow is cute. I've been trying to teach my boys to crow, but no attempts yet. They are very hormonal, however, and the poor girls.... one of the got grabbed good by the neck yesterday. The boys really have been sweet and cuddly, more so than the girls, but today were just plain ornery.

Hoping my chickens will stay in most of the afternoon as were supposed to have freezing rain/sleet -- they can decide for themselves. I leave the pop door open during the day so the ducks can get to the water bowl outside. So far I'm not having an issue with frostbite :fl

I want to warn everyone about teflon coated heat lamp bulbs. One family lost 7 chickens tonight in a short period of time!

Is it off gassing of fumes from the teflon that is so dngerous? I know that when we raised canaries years ago we stopped using any teflon pans for this reason.

Got a little work done on framing for the coop cage, until my feet froze again. Several of my girls seem to have frostbite on their combs :hit I hadn't put any bag balm on the in more than a week. It also seems that nobody is sleeping right under the sweeter heaters even though I hung them higher than really needed. I got home late from taking mom to appointments and went out to collect my eggs and close up. Everyone was sleeping in the corner to one side of the heaters. And the 2 EE girls were sleeping on top of the cabinet I have unfinished. You know what they say -- you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink.

What is it w/ chickens and doing the absolute dumbest thing possible?
Last night my daughter went into the coop before me. I come in and she's just standing there.. we use straw on the floor. She's looking around for Ash's tiny egg.. then as we're standing there we hear a loud POP! After some digging we find her tiny CRUSHED egg under the straw. She must have laid it on the floor and it got buried while they were digging around. All that hard work for nothing.
I noticed some tracks in the snow this morning... 1 is either a possom or a raccoon and the other is a cat. Plus bird prints since there's feed in the straw that's been strewn about in the snow. And of course I moved my trail cam so it wasn't sitting right to actually get any pictures.

I've thought about getting a trail cam, but haven't done so yet. Maybe next year a camera. I did put 3 of the battery operated motion detector lights and I'm pretty happy with those. I didn't put one on the far side of the chicken house because there's no tree or post on that side and the barn is too far away. More than likely nothing will try getting in from that side anyway.

I've had some large cat paw prints the past couple of winters too. Have never seen what is leaving them though. This was taken last year -- not sure if this was the cat tracks or something else. I think I had the cat tracks narrowed down to bobcat.

Oh wow. Thanks! What I thought was a rat I later thought it was a bird & now I'm thinking it's a rat again because it's Footprints disappear underneath a woodpile so once it gets warm again that pile is going to be moved, although I wonder if I should just put the live trap where it's going to see if I can catch it. It's a pretty big traps I don't think it's the right size to catch a rat, I caught a opossum in it before. I did get a prince in the mud ones that definitely was a coyote because apparently dog feet have the back Toes that point out where is the coyotes all point forward. Then later that was a giant dog apparently back there that my mom actually saw but I didn't get a photo of. Tomorrow I'll pull my memory card and see what he got a picture of recently but it's kind of disappointing that it it doesn't really work that great when it's cold out.

I lifted a serama nest box lid today and caught a new pullet in it, didn't know she was laying! :yesss:

We got quite a bit of snow last night and the wind blew alot of it into my pens. My silly silkied serama rooster that insists on sleeping on top of their house was surrounded by at least an inch of snow! Why, oh why!

I wonder about their decision making skills sometime. I had my Leghorn Cockerel separated from the others and I had a very nice Rubbermaid tote with a hole cut in the side with some nice wood shaving bedding in it for him but he refused to sleep in it and instead perched on the edge of the tote. I have no idea why he felt the accommodations weren't good enough for him, I had a buff orpington who actually slept in it. I don't know if he liked the whole perching idea more so than the laying in a box type area.
