I'm so old I Remember when:

Wasn't it Gerald Ford who was always stumbling and falling? Way I remember at least. Clumsy, I guess is the best way to describe him.
That was the media spin and it was reinforced and amplified by Chevy Chase's SNL routine in much the same way a lot of people think Sarah Palin said she could see Russia from her house when in fact that was a Tina Fey skit on SNL. In actuality, Sarah said you can see Russia from Alaska - which is true with the right weather conditions as it is only 55 miles or 88 km over open sea across the straights.
Gerald Ford was - as of that time - the only President who had been a college football player and was, for the most part, quite nimble on his feet. Trivia: the one thing President Ford was was the only President who was neither elected to the office of President nor Vice President.
Here's a recollection from Bob Schieffer.

I dunno. Is it really less safe or is it just that we get to hear all the awful things that happen?
Awful things have always happened but you only learned about it much later if at all.
I remember being interviewed by the police about some guy who we saw hanging around the playground. The fact that they interviewed me and my friends must have meant it was something serious. To this day I have no idea what they thought he did.
That's exactly the problem. We are so 'connected' right now that a bee expelling gas halfway across the world is news. And the population has gotten much larger but the problems remain statistically the same.

If 1 in 1000 is a victim of *insert situation here*, then a population of 1000 would only have one incident whilst a population of 100,000 would have 100. Not saying that there aren't places that are worse (or better) but statistically the odds have remained similar.

I've only seen a few crazies around here. First one was on drugs, walking along the big street here. Second one was trying to hitch a ride in cars near a school. All are easy to avoid since I can outride them.

I did once see a guy looking over his fence at me...
That was just Wilson, the "Hidy Ho" neighbor. Google it, kids

Yes. That is what I suspect to be true. Not really less safe, just feels less safe because we can read about all the bad stuff on the news pretty much live as it happens.

I'm so old I remember the episode of Gunsmoke when someone with a score to settle with Festus had come to town to shoot off the "Hangy Down" part of his ear. I remember how the Marshall tried to reason with him it seemed rather fair....
