I'm so old I Remember when:

In my opinion we don't have anything in the area that is close to our home cooking.
Going out to eat is a step down from our cooking, in my opinion.
Same around here. Living in the middle of nowhere, the only place is in a nearby village anyhow and they are only open on weekends. They do have a dang good pizza though...

That makes you very lucky!

We live "close enough" to Grand Rapids to have lots of good to very good restaurants. And if you want to spend the bucks, some excellent restaurants. And a bunch of crap stuff too.

I remember when we had Blue Laws. Almost everything was closed on Sundays.

Later, stores could only open on Sundays from 1-6 pm.

Sundays were family day.
And people survived. Now stores are open no matter what. I don't blame the stores or laws. I blame the people. If people didn't go to stores on Sundays/holidays/weather events, the store would not be open.

It's true. I hate when people go shopping on Thanksgiving. The same day we give thanks for all we have, people have to go out and buy more, and make other people work that day

Case in point, I grew up in the Province of Quebec, right across from Ontario. Quebec was allowed to open on Dec 26th but Ontario was not. So those greedy stores started opening anyhow and paying a fine because they still made a profit.

NOT saying the people that go out shopping on these days are not to blame either.

I also remember what a big deal it was to go shopping on a Thursday nite, the only nite grocery shops stayed open til 9p.m., and the only time my parents could actually go shopping together. Saturdays were all about markets and local school yard fairs, and even these closed at noon. Sundays and public holidays were always quiet days at home waiting for the Sunday roast dinner. Pop would read the Sunday paper and us kids got the colouring-in section and puzzles to do. Car tinkering and driving lessons for my aunty or re-painting the garden gnomes are also strong Sunday afternoon memories.
