I never had a pager. When they were common enough that some people -- but not everyone -- had them, the common perception where I worked was that it was predominantly drug dealers who had them.
That is not untrue 😊 I did get a cell as soon as they evolved from brick phones so I had both for a time. Kids...

That was what the local news seemed to think. If you had a pager and were not a doctor (or other such "must be able to get ahold of you 24/7" professional), you were a drug dealer. They fostered that notion with footage of presumed dealers sitting out on the street corners, getting a page, and going to a pay phone.
