I'm so old I Remember when:

We just used inner tubes. Except when we were really little, Mom had a picture of me and my twin in a turkey roaster.
We used kitchen trays. Thinking about it they may have been roasting pans from the old stove.

I had a sled like that, but it usually just sank into the snow. I was happy when they came out with saucer sleds!
Saucers are fun for spins & such, but their BEST use is for packing down the run so the real sleds can get some SERIOUS speed!

A toboggan was my vehicle of choice. Get some siblings and cousins on that sucker and you could really pick up speed flying down the hill dodging berry bushes and rocks hidden under the snow, ducking under the barbed wire fence in the upper cow pasture, across the frozen pond, down the drive, past the barn and the house, across the road, and through the apple trees to come to a rest just before the creek that ran next to the railroad tracks. Good times.
