I turned out OK even though I was never hit as a child.

I was actually rarely spanked as a child and never at school. My brother on the other hand was rather hard headed.
My parents more often chose to ground us. Grounding last a lot longer than a spanking.

Crazy English language. Some terms may be regional too.

A beating implies severe hitting. Bruising, bleeding possibly concussion or broken bones.

A "spanking" is done more out of love. I would never "beat" a child. I did "pop" my child on the behind a couple times. A "pop" is more of a type of spanking. Spankings were often shortly followed by long talks and lots of hugs!


When used in reference to corporal punishment such as "The child recieved a paddling at school for bad behavior."
This means a couple "hits" on the buttocks with a wooden board (a paddle). Never hard enough to leave marks or bruises and not on bare skin.

Just one of my siblings ever got corporal punishment by my knowledge. It was my elder sister, who stayed overnight with a boyfriend without permission, when she was about 16yo. My dad probably got furious bc he was afraid she might get pregnant way too young.
I even didn’t know about this punishment until I was in my twenties.

I think the worst punishment I ever recieved was for sneaking with friends to a pond to go swimming. I was about 15. By this age Daddy considered me a young lady and would not spank me. He grounded me for a month! He said young ladies should not be sneaking back to that pond. Some kids would drink beer back there. He didn't want me hanging out with that crowd. My friends and I were not drinking but all our dads still said no! Daddy was right.

By 15 I was pretty much playing by my own rules, and I don't think my Dad could have articulated something appropriate or not for a 'young lady' if he tried! Me, too. Which suckered my parents into doing it again. Over the next twenty or so years, my brother demonstrated the many errors in their thinking! Dang, I love that guy!

Oh, yes, we did this too. We rode our bikes everywhere too. We could go to the town pool and swim all we wanted. When we left home we were told what time to be back most of the time just before dark.

The pond was in the back of a field. From home, we had to walk through the woods to get there. My father was in the Rescue Squad so he knew everyone in the area. He knew some of the rough kids went back there. My friends and I did not know but we found out.
