I'm worried about Kane, my GSD

What Ranchie and Imp said, ya numpty. What's a numpty?

My Rondy who had a coat like Kane's and weighed nearly 100 # did not handle the heat well. He kept himself in good shape but had trouble with the heat his entire life.

Pretty girl. Jax has an appt. for his OFA x-rays next month. He just turned two. Kane has a ways to go before his OFA certification. I don't anticipate a problem for either of them.

Edited because I'm tired and can't spell.

So, when is your appointment? I am going to throw my 2 cents in. Worry is bad for you and waiting may be bad for him. It is probably a simple remedy or nothing at all. If you don't go you may end up eliminating or lessening his activities because you think something may be wrong. Not fair to him or you either.

They are all gorgeous by the way.

Jax has an appt. with the city vet next month to get his x-rays for the OFA cert. I'm going to call today and find out if they can see Kane the same day, although I will most definitely want the same vet at that practice (the one that saw Charlie Girl), so not sure it's possible for the same day.

Good. Please let us know outcome. Prayers to you and all your critters.

Glad you've got an appt.
To make him more comfortable in the nasty, humid AR heat, you can shave quite a bit of fur and not have it show. Shave the inside of his thighs, his tummy, the inside top third of his foreleg and his "armpits". There are lots of blood vessels in those areas and this will help him cool down a LOT faster and keep him more comfy.

I used to do this for my long-GSD coated GSD/BC mix - it made a world of difference to his comfort in even hotter and just as muggy FL

You might check out the premium lists for the local dog shows. Some of them offer testing at pretty good prices. My dogs have their hearts OFA certified, some were tested at the show for $35. The vet is board certified, will recommend further testing if anything is noticed. My breeds Irish Wolfounds and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers need several tests to have them CHIC'd. Look up the testing on the OFA website. You can find the premium lists for shows close to you at Infodog.com and Onofrio.com

Thanks Slinky, but I doubt we could ever get the boys to a show. The closest show I've ever seen to us was in Texas, Dallas to be exact. We just don't do that much traveling, it's hard on me.
I really like the vet in the city. He joined an old timey vet and is still fairly fresh out of vet school. When my Charlie Girl, an irish wolfhound X, needed x-rays to confirm her cancer I called everywhere, since our vet doesn't have x-ray equipment. All the vets around here insisted that they would only x-ray her under sedation. That dog would have let you cut her leg off without sedation! She didn't need it. He was the only vet not only willing to x-ray her without sedation but to do what needed to be done with all the kindness and gentleness Charlie deserved.

We aren't too worried about the boys hips. We'll get them OFA'd for our own peace of mind. They won't be bred, so that's not an issue.

In the meantime would Kane play in a baby pool of water? How does he feel about ice? I know when it is super hot I sometimes freeze liter bottles of water and toss them out in the yard for the dogs to worry. Usually they puncture the bottle and then drink the cold water as the ice melts and they sling the bottle around.

Kane has a nice, dense coat. Perhaps he is officially an air conditioning kind of dog?
