Impacted Crop?

5Leepy! :

Here's info on doing a crop flush... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=193388

And
, you might want to look into a crop bra as well...

Do you think that'll work? I mean I felt something that was hard and as long as a finger. She can expel that out? If so, I'll give it a try when my Uncle and Grandma aren't looking

I just had a chick in May with a sour crop. I put Apple Cider Vinegar in the water for a couple weeks. I also made sure they have FINE GRIT. Chicks should be given grit regardless if they are eating mash or not. Also you can massage the crop gently and try giving a tiny amount of bread soaked in oil (Olive, Mineral or Veg) I called my vet and she told me either is fine.
My chick is just fine now.

I really don't know, I've never had a hen with this problem before but it's suggested in several places on this site. It may not get the item out but it sounds like it may fix a problem if stuff is fermenting in there or something. If you're careful about doing it I probably wouldn't hurt. Go to my page if you want, I have a list of links for my own reference of posts and info I found might be useful to me at some point. There are a couple of crop posts you can read.

Good Luck!

Ok, I got permission from my grandma to do the surgery.

Im going to try flushing it also.

This will probably all take place at my place since this particular bird has a buddy that will attack me if I get a hold of her.

Any tips on crop surgery?

And for flushing the crop, how would I ensure that I don't squirt the solution down the windpipe?

Go to my page here https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=92179 and go to the link named "crop info". On that link at the VERY bottom are a couple of diagrams to help you find the right place to put the tube. Read the posts on that link as well, it's very imformative about flushing the crop AS WELL AS doing the surgery if you need to. I think you should only do the surgery as a last resort. Try flushing the crop first, massaging, etc...

Also, there are youtube videos of the crop surgery so you can get a really good idea of what is involved. Go to youtube and search "impacted crop surgery" and you'll see several.

I still also recommend the crop bra because it sounds like her crop is pretty stretched out. Here's one http://crazykfarm.mybigcommerce.com/products/Birdy-Bra-Crop-Supporter-{47}-Chest-Protector.html but you can probably make one yourself pretty easily. Or, just Google poultry crop bra and you'll find others.

Keep in mind that the Hen will need some time to heal from the stress of the surgery and won't be able to go back to her flock for some time.

Good Luck!

Anyone? What can I do? I'm not sure the vinegar thing will work because the chickens don't seem to like their designated water. Instead they just go to where the water builds right under the faucet thingy.

I'm having the SAME issue, my lavender has a squooshy crop and last night I flipped him upside down to empty his crop and two pieces of straw came out, He sat by the water and drank until his heart was content, He's still not acting right and I think in two days I will have to do it again. I beleive he still has some straw in him, I don't think he can pass it, I beleive it is stuck somewhere in his system. I wish someone knew a way for him to pas it... He's my only lavender, I would be devisated if I lost him...
