Impacted crop .....

Sorry to hear your hen is not well. I wanted to ask you what you fed the hen after she was operated on. I did the procedure on 2 hens last evening myself (with a helper) and they are both alert and drinking water with honey and eating some scrambled egg and yogurt. Not sure when or how to reintroduce grit and grain. Did your vet give you any ideas? Thank you

Hi the vet said she is to eat little and often, I mixed a little grit with some layers pellets and gave her half a mug full at a time at different intervals in the day, gave her plenty of fresh water with ACV in she was fine

I think she has sour crop not quite sure what to do, I use news paper and sawdust for bedding

How old is she? Don't give ACV in her water with sour crop. If she has impaction, you should be able to feel it. Here is a link you may have seen, it talks about putting baking soda in the water.

Other things can happen to cause these problems like cancers, tumors, marek's disease, even worms can slow the crop down to empty. You may need to treat her with an anti-fungal medication.

She's about 1.5 years old she was a picture of health before she had an impacted crop, she's my best one so want to do everything I can for her! Ok I'll try baking soda thanks for the link - I've also read that no vomiting the hen and to use white maggots?? May give that a try. Thank you

PROGRESS!!! gave her baking soda in water & she's pooping solids again!! Will continue to massage her crop & keep the baking soda going & will try maggots today!!

Thats good news. :)

When my hen had crop issues, I vomited her. There is risk, however, its what your comfortable with. Hopefully the baking soda is enough.

I've come home and her crop is not squishy now just feels like a small hard ball, topped up her water with more baking soda & gave olive oil and a good massage, fingers crossed that she will improve

Hmmm not all is ok as it seems, her crop was squishy again this morning with a small hard ball in it (feels like grain) sticking with the baking soda & water gave her some pellets soaked in olive oil and water just so she's eaten something! Although she is still pooping and laying eggs - just keep going I suppose! If anyone has any suggestions then I'm all ears

Tube feed her lots of water and massaging her crop. Sounds like she has an impaction again. How old is she?
