Impacted nostril??? What in the world is this??? PICS UPDATE post 27

Beekissed- could a tumor have gotten that big overnight? Little bernie is quite the bad boy around here and stands up to all the boys. Perhpas one of them ground his face into some gravel or something? I am extremely worried about infection in there seeing as it is soooo close to his little brain. I put vasoline on there, I will let it sit overnight and try and work on him in the morning. Hopefully speckledhen is right and it's just a piece of scratch or something. If not I will see about taking him to the vet, I can't loose my bernie

I'll bet Speckled Hen is right. It is probably debris of some sort, which got stuck and irritated the nostril and it got weepy around it and dried like cement. It will probably take a little work, and a second person to hold him, but with a little softening, you'll probably be able to get that out of there. You can treat it with neosporin afterwards, and just watch it for awhile. He'll most probably be just fine once it is out.

Though it looks like it could be a benign tumor, not likely that a tumor would grow that big over night...this could be just what is suggested, a particle or grain or something that got lodged there and has created an infected/scabbed/dried secretions area. Let's hope its something that simple and it comes out with the soaking and gentle probing.

It looks as if it is causing some mild swelling around his eye..you can see it more when you look at the head on pic...his eye is squinted a little.

Hope you get it out...if you do, could you post a pic of the material and the nostril when you are done? It should be interesting and educational~I've never had a bird have something of this nature.

Doesn't look like a tumor to me. I'd use some tweezers and dig it out.... wipe it down with some dilute Vet Rx after.

Bekissed- I sure will post pics after I get this thing out. I have been chipping away at it this morning but it wasn't quite soft enough yet so I put more vasoline on it. I will try again in a few hours or so. It is really stuck in there what ever it is. I did notice the eye swelling a bit. Makes me want to get it out even more now. I got the toothpick under there but when I tried to pry it up it wouldn't budge much. This is soooo strange and I have never seen anything like this either

Does he act like this is a painful procedure or can you tell? Chickens don't seem to feel much pain just fear of being held down, I guess. Any drainage at all?

So, the day before yesterday he didn't even have this thing? That is so strange....I can't wait 'til you get it out so you can visualize just what it looks like up there and the tissue involved.

When i pick at it he flinches like it is painful. I have been picking at it all day and still haven't got it out of there. No drainage what so ever. The day before I didn't notice anything abnormal, his bad side looked exactly like his good side. Very strange indeed. I'll update the thread once I get it out and post pics I promise.
