It stands for generations. Scientific terms can be confusing.

So like my oldest hens that I got at the same time would be F1 to me? And all offspring I hatch from them are F2? If I hatch from F2 generation, then those offspring would be F3?

And Buff Orpington/Australorp.

These are the first crossings before my F1s.

My F1s, are Buff Orpington/Barred Rock X Buff Orpington/Australorp.

My F2s are made from breeding the F1s.

I'm pretty sure some people would've call those crossings F1, like you. I agree, there's probably no incorrect way to do it.
