Incubating shipped eggs upright vs on side

I had to move to California to care for my mother in law for a few years and had to sell my own home. I used to tell everyone 1st thing I was gonna do is get more chickens when I had my own home again. My hubby made the mistake of telling me the feed store had chicks ( we've been in our own home a year). I ran to the feed store and happily picked out 10 RIR chicks. I was so twitterpated by them..i went back and got 10 orpington chicks( i couldnt decide earlier between the two). Then i lost my mind and bought 3 bators..i hatched cemanis, seramas and partridge bramahs. Meantime..while I've been fussing over babies..we put up two coops up and running! Now I'm planning a 3rd coop! My pour hubby! I been keeping him Really busy.

That sounds like me! Lol I went to TSC back in the spring and bought 5 RIR and 5 BR, all straight run. Had them for a week and got nervous that we'd end up with all roosters so I went back and bought 6 sex link pullets. All of the BR and 1 RIR ended up being roos. Husband built them a nice coop, the girls started laying August 1st. A week later I went into TSC and they had Salmon Faverolles chicks and I bought 6. 1 died a day later, but I ended up with 4 pullets and 1 cockerel, so I'm thrilled! And then I decided I wanted to hatch some eggs myself, so here we are with 20 CL eggs and 10 Silkie eggs in the incubator. My husband may be building me two new coops before this is all over with :lau I kept reading about chicken math, but didn't completely understand what everyone was talking about. Now I do lol.

Out of 20 " pullets" I ended up w/one RIR roo! He is so big and gorgeous we decided to keep him as we free range our layers. Omg...can u imagine how many chicks i would have in the spring if I don't pull the eggs?

We kept our RIR roo too, he's beautiful. The BR all went to the freezer yesterday in fact. And yeah, you'd be overrun with chickens before you knew it lol!

Just a little update, today is day 3 and I decided to candle the eggs to see if any of the loose air cells had reattached..Unfortunately only 7 of the 20 have  The ones that haven't aren't terrible, they don't move much. But who knows what will happen. I couldn't see much else in the eggs, the shells are dark and thick and I wasn't in a very dark room. Hopefully they show some development soon!

While I was at it, I checked my Silkie eggs. They're so light it was much easier to see in them, and I could see a little veining in them all! One has something I've never seen before though...the air cell looks bubbly? Anyone ever seen that? In all my googling I haven't seen pictures of an air cell like that.

Day 12. Candled the eggs, had a couple clear CL eggs and a bunch of blood rings:hitAll together had to get rid of 10 of them...so now I'm left with 10 that are developing nicely. 2 of the Silkies had blood rings too. So I'm down to 16 eggs left in the incubator out of the 28 I started out with.

Awww that's a big bummer... its not fun losing almost half a set. But look at the bright side, you still have quite a few to look forward to hatching! And the worst part is over. The rest should continue to develop just fine. Its just the gamble we take trying to do shipped eggs. :hugs

Sorry I somehow missed this notification! Yeah I'm definitely disappointed to have lost so many. However, today is day 19! Started lockdown yesterday. Hoping for some little fluffy butts soon! I saw movement from all the Silkies when I candled yesterday. It's almost impossible to see in the CL eggs but hopefully they're all fine too. I'm so excited, every time I walk by the incubator I check for pips lol.
