Does it lead into the abdominal cavity or is it just the skin? What is it doing with the cornstarch? Maybe add some antibiotic ointment and wrap the little ones body with some cloth for pressure.

I don't know if it lead into the abdominal cavity...and now I can't see it! The cornstarch seems to have slowed the bleeding, not completely but it's better. It's got a penny/dime sized pancake on it's butt now though! Bright red. Ugh. I should have inspected it a lot closer before posting, I just, little chicks don't have a lot of blood to lose!

I have seen this before, I know exactly what your talking about, but usually people show me them after they cleaned umbilical thinking it was pasty butt just after hatch. let it be, put it in a cup in the brooder do not let it run around.

Ok, and the cornstarch patty that my loving SO put on it's butt? What about that? Leave it? Wash it off?

I would've done the same thing. I would just follow Sally's advice at this point.

2 Serama
6 Blue Mix
4 CCL

So far I've had:

4 Mix hatch (half were sticky)
3 CCL hatch (one was sticky)


There are NO pips on the remaining eggs (DAY 22)

2 Serama
1 CCL
2 Mix


What's the likelyhood of them actually hatching? Opinion? Guess? IMexperience....?

no internal pips? What about movement when you candle?

Veny, unfortunately there is nothing much I can tell you to do, there is only a few minute timeline that an open umbilicus can be sewn or stitched. I have seen people attempt to close them manually later with glue and stitches and they do well for a day or two and then they simply burst with infection. I am not quite sure what to tell you to do. if you have a cake of corn starch on it you can take the chance and pray that there is no bacteria inside and it will make it.

if you take it off, there really are no other options because more than likely its innards will slowly make way out again.

EDIT: I put a thick smear of iodine ointment over it, put her in the cup and set her in the brooder where all the other chicks were (figured that was the good spot for temperature) Better go help my spouse with the boys and hope for the best..... aw I just feel in the dumps now.

and what sucks more is the will eat and drink and do really good and then eeeekkkk so you are warned just in case ok? But I pray yours is just fine, and it was just a tiny tear?

I wish i could have seen how bad it was. maybe you can find a picture that may be close to what you have seen?

Nothing that I could see. I did not candle serama though. only blue eggs. No internal pips (ive never seen one though, so that's not saying much!) no movement, a little fluid maybe?
