Hatched 7 of 12. 2 of them did not make it. One made it a few days, we called him sleepy because he waa always falling asleep as he was eating or drinking. And the other one knly made it a few hours. With our 6 laying hens, rooster, 2 seramas, 5 hatched chicks and the 7 buff chicks we bought. We are up to 21 chickens.

Hi everyone! It's been a while since I dropped in. I'm almost 100 PAGES behind lol. Hope everyone is good and I didn't miss anything exciting.

It was a beautiful day here today! We were super busy all day working outside. I even got some sunburn! We borrowed my dad's truck and picked up a load of mulch. Turns out we'll have to borrow his truck again since one load was nowhere near enough. We also picked up some 6 x 8 ft fence posts from tractor supply to use for raised boxes and had 5 tons of top soil delivered. We didn't even get to that before hubby had to go to work. The chickens were quick to discover the new mulch and promptly started digging in it hmm.png I'm still waiting for them to notice the giant pile of dirt in the garden lol.

Tomorrow, we're making a trip that I really don't want to make. My Pappy has a friend that owns a chicken farm that he's just dying to take me to and show me. I guess this guy has 10,000 chickens (laying hens) supposedly free range. My aunt was there and said that they all have their beaks trimmed and have minimum coop space (not surprised). She said that I'm not going to like it. Pappy is so excited to show me but I really don't think he has any clue. It's going to be so hard not to cry but I have to try my hardest not to. Pappy isn't in the best health and has been in and out of the hospital a lot lately and I don't want to show that I'm upset over it all. Wish me luck. I'll have to report back on how it was.
ohhhh just have fun with pappy!!! I am so glad you have him to spend time with

That's going to be a tough day for you for sure.

I have one internal pip with my shipped eggs. I don't know who's talking, but someone is! I decided to keep them all upright in cartons, as they have been all along. There are 6 eggs from one source (day 21) and 12 eggs from an other source (day 20). Looks like there will be some success with these shipped eggs! My GD is here this week, so she's super excited.
fl.gif
awwwww enjoy your GD!!! how exciting!

@Sally Sunshine

@Sally Sunshine

Our 1st broody hatched 5/6 yesterday. We looked at the 6th egg- looks like died in she'll. smelled horrible. Put it in the trap and caught a coon overnight, so put to good use. We grafted 4 blue andalusians on her last night- currently appears to be successful. We are currently happy as mama ended up locked out of her nest on 2 occasions and we are unsure how long he eggs went uncovered.

our second broody is sitting on 6. Started on 7, but one broke open day 1. Another egg ended up with a small crack that was waxed. She is due to hatch next week.
oh wow good hatch rate momma hen!!!! GLAD THE COON IS GONE!!! what did you do with it?

I got into trouble last night at Giant Eagle. I walked in, and there was a Marzetti display. I took a picture, and the security guard yelled at me.
lau.gif
lol dont you hate when that happens?

Quote: JACE!!!! bday!!! anything special planned?

Quote: DONT WASH them!!! thats all I can say!!! I never had so many early DIS in any eggs EVER!! oh and they were ancona lol the guy told husband and he failed to tell me the guy gave ancona instead!!

Well my list won't get done while I'm staring at the screen...

I hope you all have a wonderful Saturday!

Mites are coming back, but I painted the inside of the coop and the roosts with a matte plastic-based paint so they can't get as hard of a hold as they did on the bare wood and I'm spraying near every day to beat them back. They aren't likely to be as bad this year as last year.

Like I mentioned, I painted the inside of the coop. It's an apple green paint, and i'll be using the same to paint the outside of the coop too. I'm going with a modified barn-style paint job, with apple green walls and white trim on the roof and corners. The roof is a black self-tarring shingle, so it'll look real nice when it's finished. Husband and I are going to be leveling it and possibly shifting the coop position in the run on Sunday or Monday.
you know I need pictures right hippie????? lol

My Silkie egg was fertile

Looks like family time is over for me. I hit my limit of crap I could take, and my mother wouldn't back off. I'm here alone (and relaxed! :D ). Sorry for the kids, but I can't always suffer for others. I needed to stand up for myself.

Last night we bbqed at my mother's, and made s'mores in the fire pit.
Today we are going to meet at the bagel shop (Starbucks next door!

) and most of us (six adults!) are going to take the three kids to Chuck E Cheese (it's an indoor kid's amusement restaurant, Benny) and maybe a movie while the widow and my oldest sister do errands.
Glad you were able to spend some time with the family, i am sure it was tough!

Morning everyone. Haven't been on much, my phone went for a swim and I do most of my BYCing from there. Waiting on a new tablet to get here so I can (try) keep up with you guys again!

Some sad news for the Emu eggs. I had to pull 3 of them yesterday. 2 had lost too much weight to be able to hatch, 1 of those never started developing (and had started leaking) and the other had a very well developed chick that had quit. Egg #3 was right on track, but a couple of days ago I noticed a slightly off smell in the 'bator. I couldn't figure out which one was smelly until yesterday, and OMG, when I put my nose up to it to take a sniff, it was pretty awful. I didn't bother trying to eggtopsie that one, but when I disposed of it (and I tried to be gentle), it basically popped when it thumped the ground a bit and the smell was like nothing I've ever experienced before. I probably lucked out though, with as easily as it popped open, it could have just as easily done that in my incubator when I was moving the eggs around on the wire floor.

So, I'm down to 5 eggs now. They seem to be doing well, weights are on track and some of them are wiggling. I'm hoping to see my first Emu chick in the next 5-8 days!

Sounds like she was on 16 eggs, sounds like a lot for one bird, Congrats on the 14 !!!

Thanks guys. It's a bummer, but these things happen. It could have been worse, at least that stinky egg didn't explode in my 'bator. If it had, I probably would've just had to throw it away!

You made my day, MC - I needed that!

Quote: Thanks - at least it's done. I've only done it once before - hard to be good at something without practice. I'll get there.

Quote: See? I can enjoy these adorable photos and have a totally SQUEEEEE moment just like Banti - but have NO desire to actually own any. (Maybe it has something to do with needing to build for them and knowing the amount of back pain that would be involved...) Oh, Happy Birthday, Jace!

@LittleLakePhil - I missed sending you hugs earlier.
hugs.gif
I wish you could sleep more easily. (Have you tried to sleep in an armchair/recliner? I have had a few relatives that have struggled with sleeping in a bed/flat for various medical reasons and ended up sleeping in a recliner.)

My Silkie egg was fertile
Congrats!!!
clap.gif
You'll be able to breed and hatch your own chickees now! (Most people don't hatch really early pullet eggs though, because the chicks are stronger if the pullet/hen is older.)

Looks like family time is over for me. I hit my limit of crap I could take, and my mother wouldn't back off. I'm here alone (and relaxed!

I think one of the most important interpersonal and self-preservation skills to have is to recognize when you need to remove yourself from a situation. Glad you stood up for yourself.

That's a bummer (but SO glad you didn't have an exploder). I wonder if this is because of the really lengthy incubation (and wonder if there are things one could do to mitigate the increased risk of infection)... Looking forward to seeing babies soon! The emus are like the ducklings - no way could I get them, but I can't wait to experience them vicariously through you!

OK, I'm going to take a little nap, I think, then I have to grade exams. (Benny, can you send me grading vibes?)
