Well, went 44 out of 50 out of my mixed pen. All chicks healthy and getting around good. Pulled them out of the hatcher at 6am this morning and moved to the brooder. Out of the 6 that didn't hatch, 5 quit early and blood ringed and 1 quit after lockdown. All the parents in the mixed pen are pure bred and all hatched off my breeders. There are splash orp's, black orp's, buff orp's, light Brahma's, and barred rocks. They are covered by barred rock and blue orp Roos. This is the pen we sell eating eggs from most of the time.

I decided to cull the four,couse i thought that it was not fair to keep the alive if they couldnt live a happy and healthy life..had four eggs left in bator at day 23 three died probably day 19 on left,and it the one with the air cell on the side it pipped internally last night and externally this morning have 13 fine babys..

Way to go, CH! Sorry those didn't make it. You had trouble with a few legs, and you did the right thing by culling them. You still have some good looking chicks left to take care of. GOOD JOB!!!!

Well...Sally and I each have an opinion, and neither is all right or all wrong.

Mine addresses the wound, and trying to splint the joint so it's protected while it heals. For that, you'd apply ointment and put the band-aid over the injured area.

The other use for band-aids is as a splint to hold the legs parallel to each other, to keep the weak leg from kicking out. In a nice deep cup like you've shown, it's not necessary, as the taper of the cup will help keep the legs together.

It's important that the chick continue to move the leg, even a little, to prevent it from getting too stiff. They do have amazing healing ability so if they are going to get better, you should see improvement within a couple of days.

No. The Pox cleared up about 2 weeks ago. She is super skinny too! I wonder if the polish were keeping her from the food. I mean she is eating great and drinking great. I just dont know what it could be.

I dont think so. The mass is closer to her vent. So the egg should be hard by then.

my pox survivals are skinny too although they eat a lot (grower feed till they put some weight on). some of them had diarrhea due to worms. when I wormed them I found different worms expelled with their poop. I suggest you worm your chickens.
