Common sense would tell me that being styrofoam would have nothing to do with temp spikes, unless the lid didn't fit properly ( take notice I didn't say anything about it being on backward  :p  ). I'd rather think temp spikes would be more a problem with a faulty stat, & you've addressed that problem already.  Of course I could be wrong; it's happened once before.

:rolleyes:
Ceasar had his Brutus, Charles the first had his Cromwell, Sally had her duct tape, and Bubbles had her bator lid, huh?

I really aint sure at this point, I'm just quotin whuts told me so all feedback is much appriciated.

I think maybe I'll add rocks, finish meddling with the thermometers, get temp to 101, turn on the egg turner, and walk away.
I think I am obcessing a little too much an' need to :duc , right?

Good luck with your Orloff's.  I am interested in your hatch rate - I understand they are difficult.  My Orloff Rooster is dominant now, but the hen is molting :-(

Not nearly enough tomatoes for two people.  You need LOTS of tomatoes if you want to can!

Thanks! Not many people are interested in Orloffs, but there's a dedicated group trying to get them into the APA. I just have them for fun. They are still young, hatch rate will probably be better in summer.

UPDATE
@TJChickens
@Sally Sunshine
@Bubbles12345
@Pensmaster
@Kwhites634
@anyoneelsewhogivesachit

Over 20 quail hatched this monin
Got 5 or 6 other chicks between the bantam ee and the serama

The serama hatched hard.
I will get some pichers when I ain't at work

Congratulations!

Sorta... I am getting mixed advice on the temp to run, and I don't know what to do since the LG is still air. I put in a probe thermo I had lying around (after testing it and finding it was 5 degrees off! :eek: ) and it is warming up now.
the LG Gets its nicknames of "easy bake' and "death trap" for a reason. You are getting advice to keep it s tiny bit lower than 102 so you can catch it when it jumps to 105 for no reason.

Ask 5 different people and you may get 5 different answers. That's why it's recommended to do a test hatch with cheap local eggs and take notes so you can determine what settings work best for your bator in your house.

I run lights and it helps a good bit
Got a few old layers that "don't lay anymore" for free ,and they started lay within a few weeks

Check your sunup/down charts and I like to give light before sunup

So this helps not disturb their "bedtime"
Or when they go to roost

I think this info would help country lovin's chickens as they are turning their lights off at 8:30 pm.

I don't use lights anymore gets the roosters up too early. :lau

When I did run the lights it was morning only. Natural lighting for roosting

It sounds to me like your ready. Just dive in!!! Practice eggs from Trader Joes if you like that way it's only 3 bucks out of pocket. And they hatch well.

Bubbles, I have been using an old hovabator still air and run at 100-101 rocks or sealed containers of water help moderate temp swings, but I still see it rise to 102-103 for brief periods around the 10-14 day mark, then it seems to settle back again after an hour or so.
The older the thermostat, the more touchy they seem to be. Just my experiences, but any heat sink helps reduce fluctuations.

Good morning all! :frow

Country, any possibility of running two timers and different lights? I run my morning light at two sixty watt bulbs that come on at 530 am, and my evening one with a 25 watt that comes on at 5 pm and turns off at 9. I get steady production from my EE's, OE's and Rocks throughout the winter with this set up. Not as good as spring and summer, but at -20 how can you blame the ladies for trying to conserve energy? Might be worth a shot with your flock

Hi Bu. Wats up? You must remember that under the broody hen, all your calculation, and worry don't make any difference! And stil they can hatch very good!
So give them the basick needs, and live them be!
