Common sense would tell me that being styrofoam would have nothing to do with temp spikes, unless the lid didn't fit properly ( take notice I didn't say anything about it being on backward). I'd rather think temp spikes would be more a problem with a faulty stat, & you've addressed that problem already. Of course I could be wrong; it's happened once before.
