Did you calibrate your thermometers?Hi everyone! I'm new to this thread, and pretty new to having chickens. I grew up around them, but didn't start my own flock until last June. I hatched them in an incubator. Out of 13 eggs, only 3 hatched. Then in January, I had 10 eggs in the incubator, and only 2 hatched, and 1 of those died a few days later. I am having problems keeping my temp up high enough. It's one of those styrofoam incubators you get from tractor supply. Does anyone have any tips for getting my temps up?

want that silver chippy!!! congrats! Here's 5 of the 8 that hatched Mon, Tue, Wed, plus one of the babies that the broodies hatched earlier this week... Sat or Sun? The broody baby is the big blue one in the back/right. I'm not sure what my striped one is, but the one on the left is a CCL, not sure what the blurry one is, the white and black ones are silkie/sizzle/frilkie mix.

what????
Hope you don't mind but I am stealing this photo
ducks are tough I had a ancona external pip well over 48 just be cautious BLOOD STOP veins with blood stop!! and sometimes even then they have not absorbed!! again they are TOUGH to know when because the veins recede before they are ready!!!one duck has been pipped going on 48 hrs. It is moving and peeping through the hole the membrane around the hole has turned yellow. Humidity is at 80%. Should I assist? The other one is still rocking the egg but no pip, day 31 for it. I don't know what to do. I don't want to lose my baby mallards.
Help,I just came in the room and the incubator thing two and three are in was 40.1 celcius
awwwww thats cool Phil!!! hope the wife is ok!!!Took my grandson into town today....bought him his first BB gun....he wants to go out and used it in the yard.....
Welcome!! did you calibrate your thermo hygros before setting eggs?New to hatching and to this forum. My first hatch didn't go as planned. I had 14 eggs and 6 weren't fertile (that was a fun project with my son thought) and the other 8 didn't hatch on Monday as expected. I had built it up so much that I was really disappointed when they didn't hatch, and then a few days of roller coaster ups and downs based on responses I was getting to my questions and pictures I had posted about the float test. I still have six eggs from the 3/21 scheduled hatch and I am not giving up on them, just trusting my gut. they are 4 days overdue but I was having trouble getting the temp right since it was a borrowed bator .. it was 92 for the first 6 days and on day 6 I got it up to 99.5 so I am giving them until Sunday before I toss them. they are in their own bator so they will not hurt anything if, God forbid, one explodes. I did to a float test and got great results (based on the awesome article I found on this site ...... but several folks have indicated that those aren't accurate and I should just throw the 6 away..... my gut tells me to give it to sunday.. maybe I am a softie but the 'float test post" was so well written and had a LOT of similar responses and I followed it to a T .. and I know there are LOTS of opinions... I am too new to have an opnion so in this case I just go with my gut...
I have another 25 eggs that are on day 18 so we will be candling tonight.. I have learned so much from these threads and I am SO THANKFUL to everyone for the information they have shared.. I hope this batch nets with better results, temps and humidity have been spot on so I am hopeful. I am loving it so much I asked for two bators as birthday gifts, so with the two borrowed ones I have and the two new ones I should have a fun Spring/Summer!
Easter hatch doing well. 11 eggs in lockdown. 5 are currently pipped. Also have a broody hen- have 7 eggs under her now. This is the hen with a previous eye injury- she's been in a nesting box going on a couple weeks, but not sitting on eggs. She stayed on fake eggs yesterday night, so we put real ones under her today. She took a break and made a new nest next to the eggs and was getting frustrated expecting the eggs to move to her... Silly bird
Now how would that help you out!!!So just wondering does anyone want to start a thread for those who can't get any eggs to hatch or even pip. We could all complain together it would be a blast!I must mention though it is fun seeing all these chicks!![]()
