Hi Jessimom did you assist any of the 40. I assisted 5. 5 have died. All others doing real well. I know I said I wasn't going to assist. Just reinforces my decision next time. I also think my fans attributed to the dryness even though the humidity was up for lockdown.

No I didnt. I did have to cull 1 that I did assist. This was the first to hatch in that batch. It feels a little skinny. I hope to know more soon. Sorry you lost yours!!!!!

@ChickenCanoe According to the new rules, we are allowed 1 rooster and he has to be confined to a coop from dusk to dawn. I have no clue on whether or not that exempts him from the noise ordinance, but I'm assuming not. There are also many cities here that do not allow chickens, some of which are part of this city, and many more with ridiculously low limits (3-5). So I guess it isn't too terrible, and I should be grateful that I'm allowed to have them, but when you go from unlimited to 12 it just seems unreasonable at that time. Right now I only have 14 that are "Adults" including 1 rooster.

@DwayneNLiz I'm not sure on the grandfather thing. I'm assuming it will be just like it used to with zoning enforcement. They won't come out unless someone complains. Even if they do, I can always just say it's only 7 months old, making it not an adult and not count toward my number of chickens. 8 months (which is "Adult" age) seems like a long time to feed a broiler though. I really just need to move to a rural area. I was raised in the city, but have grown very tired of the hustle and bustle that goes with it.

Said in a nasal monotone drone voice: "Your call is very important to us. So, if you'd like to press a button, please press any button now."
If pressing 0 doesn't get me to a real person, I'm subject to hang up.
Beyond that, if my Caller ID comes up with "Out of Area" or a number I don't recognize, I won't pick it up. I figure if the name of a friend or family doesn't come up, I don't need to answer the phone to hear some freaking recording try to sell me something I don't want or can't afford. I flat refuse to deal with telephone solicitors...hate 'em with a passion.

Hello new incubating friends :)

Wish me luck! First time incubating chicken eggs in my DIY incubator.

It's made mostly from stuff I already had around including:
Omaha Steaks styrofoam cooler
Lamp and cord from scented wax burner. Uses small socket bulbs. I'm using a 20W.
hardware cloth for shelf
2l bottle for thermal mass
2 dollar store picture frames for double pane viewing window.
old computer fan
extension cord
misc 5V DC output transformer, ie wall wart
arduino (I used a pro mini)
relay board (generic 2 relay module from Aliexpress)
Dallas 18B20 temp sensor (and pull up resistor)
NRF24L 2.4Ghz radio module

OK maybe everyone doesn't have some of the last parts on hand, but I have a DIY home automation system that uses these parts as well. That's actually why there is a wireless module attached. The incubator reports back the temperature to the home automation server. If it falls above or below my preset values, it will send me a text.

Here are some pics of the incubator with it's first ever batch of eggs.
Looking through the lid's window.

Looking at the "brains" outside the incubator.

You only have to plug in to the computer to change the temperature setting. The alerts I can change via the HA system.
Next steps will be to control humidity and automate the turner. If there is interest in the project, I'll start another thread, but I've seen other arduino based incubators here before.

Hello everyone! Rookie incubator hatch has started and is going well so far. 2 are out one has its air hole pecked. I removed the egg turner yesterday after one hatching fell upside-down into the turner! So now they are flat with the hatch going, we have a few rocking too. My question is though they are flat, does the air sac cause them to tip up some? Have over half tipped up where the air sac is on top while the small end points down

Some people like there neighbors and I have no problem with that..........I'm not one of those people  Than again I'm not much of a people person either.

Sure you are..... Your a crazy chicken person
This, incubator is being so frustrating.I hope theses eggs make it

:fl

I ha e had two temp spikes already.and only day three.I need a new bator I really want these eggs to hafch

Just work with this one.... Keep on improving it...... I know you don't have the cash to lay out for a new one.

That must be SO CUTE!!!!  But, I still don't want ducks!!  I love hearing about them though!!!!

I :love DUCKS

Not everybody can be or is as awesome as you are Phil.

:). I really am..... A good neighbor.... That is.... But so are my neighbors
Doesn't coffee count as hydration?

Only if it's decaf

My day has been so long, I haven't even had coffee!

Why??????

Than you'd just be stuck pushing buttons all day. Undo the redo of the undo of the redo...........

No chit

How easy it is for a day to go from "I can handle this!" to "Who even cares?"

Real easy it usually happens walking away from pouring my first coffee
I usually hit the "who even cares" right before my DH gets home from work.

:lau
Pretty easy somedays.

Yup

I'm sorry you are having such a rough day!   I hope you find out what's going on with the daily pain!!

Probably time to get looked at...: hugs
Ms,Sally sunshines thermometer shows 100.6 and the one with the probe is in a egg cup and shows 36.0 what do I do

Sounds familiar....?

Exactly why I don't assist. I don't need a flock of needy birds reproducing their kind.
makes sense....

The grandfather thing doesn't hold much weight depending on how badly the powers that be want to eradicate some activity. There was a hog farm here for many decades. A city was created around it. Then, a subdivision was built around it. (Didn't the developer know there was a hog farm there already?)
I'm sure the developer figured he could use their financial power to put this guy out of business. It worked.
He was forced out.

If they are laying flat, you want the air cell oriented upwards ideally.
This is where the internal pip will most likely occur, and the chick can breathe the air in the cell while it rests before the external pip occurs.
Good luck with the rest of the hatch.

I wasn't aware that chickens was people too, although since I'm still able to drink leaded the unleaded is useless.
