I am so sad... all this talk about teens made me do some searching for some old horse friends of mine from middle school and I found this:

Sorry for the loss of your friend. It seems she accomplished so much in such a shot time.
A life truly worth celebrating. #@*! cancer!

Help!!!!

I came home from work, checked on my broody who was not on her eggs, opened the nest box to find a dead chick and an any invasion. One egg pipped, was covered in ants but still peeping so I carried it to incubator. I got the yuck out of nest box and I think my broody is sitting on the eggs, but what to do?!? Do you think it hatched and she killed it? Could she have crushed it and it died from her crushing egg?

Pics ... Help?!? Do I need to assist the one that is pipped? I don't know how long it's been that way.

I say don't assist yet.... Long as the chick is getting air, there's no hurry to help.

You have to separate your nest from the ants. Possibly the ants killed it.
I would make a new nest with similar material in another building even if it is in a garage or in the house. Put the hen there with the eggs in the new nest.
The only other possibility is to move all the eggs to the incubator.
Completely clean out the original nest and douse it with anything to ward off the ants. Vinegar or whatever. I'd put out some ant bait and ant bait stations.

The chick doesn't look like it was ready, the shell looks crushed. Ugh...

I put the one with pip in my incubator and put a hot wet rag in there to increase humidity.

Only one chick hatched from today's due date. I doubt any more are coming because no pips since this one pipped yesterday morning. I guess I'll have to pull a 2 week old chick in from the coop to give this little tough guy that survived the LG embryo executioner a friend.

It looks like it was ready but the shell tends to thin during incubation. Perhaps the ants irritated the hen enough that she moved around too much and crushed them.
