Confine the bird too so it can heal, injured birds will get picked on.

Update... FW vet said to give her a tums twice a day for calcium and said its not uncommon for a hen to do this. She said I should expect a few more soft ones but she should start laying normally within a couple weeks.

so, i went out to hang with my peeps and chicks for a few min. after the DH got home... and found that our dog had killed one of our young BO hens

in her dog pen.... so it had to of flown in, and she played too rough with it. i took the body out and left it just outside the pen to see if she dug out somewhere and got it, but she didnt. the rest of the chickens stayed on the other side of the house today.... it must have disturbed them to not want to wander that way. I am making a hoop coop with cattle panels soon. Does anyone know where i can get the electrified apparatus to put around it? solar powered? and not to expensive? i know, i ask for a lot

Just a few more pics from me! Brad wanted to see how the white baby quail turned out. These are all from the chicks he hatched for Chloe. It's kind of hard to see, but she has a black patch on the back of her head. There's also a black patch on the left side of her shoulder area. Unfortunately, she was being stubborn & not turning that direction for me to take a pic! These next pics are some of the other girls they're quite roly-poly little birds! I hadn't thought about it until just now looking at these pics, but the white one definitely had a different body type/shape than the others -- almost as if it were a different variety of quail. Her eggs look pretty much the same as the others, though. Of course Max and Olive, our English Shepherds, were feeling left out with all the picture taking lately, so here they are. They're just a little over a year old & are siblings. Max Olive Yes, Olive is sitting in an empty swimming pool, although I'm not quite sure why...They do love to go take a dip in our pond, though!

Looks like she has a cream color to her. Very pretty! Love the dogs as well!

Here are some of the pics from my son's Ancona ducks' bathing/preening time this past Saturday. They are now 9 weeks old. Depending how the sun catches some of their their black feathers the sheen can look emerald, royal blue or purple -- so pretty!

Lavender, Jubilee, and Chocolate Orps
I drove through blinding rainstorms to pick up my Chocolate Bantam Orp. She is the same age as my other two orps-- 16 weeks old, but she's smaller of course. She is really sweet -- the first chicken I've had that hasn't run from me! I have her in the cat carrier next to Violet and Adeline who are in the dog kennel tonight-- all in my living room. haha They all have been conversing. I'll take photos tomorrow.

I decided today that I was going to have Violet put to sleep tomorrow because she had been panting more and her stiff leg seemed hopeless. She was doing better for a while, and then it seemed like it wasn't going well. Then tonight, she kept trying to stand up. I put my hand under her to hold her up to standing position and she looked thrilled. I would lower her down, but she wanted to stand (even though she can't on her own). So now I'm thinking of making a sling kind of thing to hold her up in standing position for periods of time. I don't know what to think or do. I also have the situation of feeling like I can't be gone for more than a day while a family member cares for her. I need to be in Bloomington for a couple of days at the end of the week, so I guess I'll see how tomorrow goes.

We have most of a door! It took forever to get it square, and it doesn't look pretty as a result of all that work, but I don't think the hens will mind.

ETA: This is the human door, by the way. The chicken door will be on the opposite wall leading into the chicken yard.

It looks great! Love the build, its coming along very well!

The buff chick is sure looking nice & plump, but the lavender chick is so much smaller that the rest. Is it too early to spot a roo? The brown chick has the most developed comb so far -- if it's a roo, hopefully I got lucky & he's the only one. His neck also seems awfully long.... I couldn't get a pic of it, but the black one has some white on the tips of its outer wing feathers and some faint barring (I think) when the wings are spread out. I also noticed looking at these pictures how similar the black & lavender heads look when looking straight at them -- almost creepy, but in a good way !?!

lemon cuckoo orpington/lavender orpington mix is a cutie! Ah, they all are! Cant wait to see the color of it when its maturing.

It's supposed to get down to 54 degrees tonight and our chickens are now 8 weeks old and seem to be fully feathered - will they be okay in their open air enclosure? We do have three tote boxes in there for them to snuggle up together in.

They should be fine.As long as they have each other to snuggle they will cuddle up.

One of three done (well, mostly), and the second one in the works! Looks like we'll have to buy more siding before we can continue on the last wall, though.


Oh, and here is the outside. It will be painted barn red to match the original coop.

ETA: Two walls done (well, mostly)! We've got to get another sheet of siding tomorrow to finish the walls so that we can begin painting!

What does everyone use in the nest boxes for bedding? I always used pine shavings, but they keep scratching it to the side and the eggs are breaking when they fall out of the hen. I scooped up some dried grass clippings tonight and going to try that. So far they all seem terrified of the change lol.

I use grass and hay, seems to stay put better.

Here is a pic of my cat, Ghost, That I said i was going to post a while back but forgot lol-She is a grouchy cat! She is around a year old, but I think she still looks really young.
