INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

@pipdzipdnreadytogo I am sorry to report my experience: My beloved favorite Jersey (BJG) had to be put to sleep two years ago because she had ovarian cancer. She had "lash eggs" and I had noticed that she wasn't acting like herself. Then I noticed her waddling because she was full of fluid. That's when I took her to the vet. A Fayoumi has such a different body shape than a Jersey Giant, so as far as the lump you felt, I'm not sure if that's an indicator. Hopefully, your girl has something fixable.

Definitely all roos!! The all blue one looks like it has a pea comb. Did you get any olive Eggers. I can't remember.

I thought I remembered someone whose hen succumbed to it. Now I remember, your crazy-eyed Jersey. :hugs If you remember, how old was she when she came down with symptoms?

I was posting between classes, but now that I'm home I was able to find some research regarding the positive effects of flaxseed-rich diets on ovarian cancer in chickens. http://news.aces.illinois.edu/news/flaxseed-fed-chickens-shed-light-ovarian-cancer I don't know if it's too late to help Marama (if she does have ovarian cancer, that is), but I think I may start giving more treats including flaxseed or other foods high in omega-3s... That can't do anything but good, right?

Her symptoms do seem to be indicative of ovarian cancer, sadly... I obviously can't confirm without veterinary assistance that I can't afford, but everything is pointing that direction from what I'm finding. If I disregard the possible lump in her side, there's also heart failure or ascites, neither of which give a much better prognosis. She doesn't seem too uncomfortable for now, so I guess I'll try a few things and see if anything changes... The really unfortunate thing is Fayoumis are known to be disease resistant, and I've never seen her sick in her life until now. I guess a predisposition toward something like this can't be avoided even by the healthiest in a flock. :/

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone. It's been a tough year...

Well, am at a loss to explain why, but I found 3 more goose eggs today! 2 in one location, 1 laying randomly in the yard. I follow a few goose threads and several other keepers are seeing this also. Very unusual but I certainly won't complain. I have a waiting list, but may wind up filling requests at this rate. So any one interested send me a PM. Since my flocks are comingled for the year now, they may be mix, but likely breed specific. ganders are very choosy and my embdens keep to themselves. Likely to be either white or brown Chinese, or Embden. I am also taking requests for spring, and starting next years list as well.

pipd ~ Yes, Jersey always looked like she was looking back at you! She was such a great flock leader—laid back, but firm. She had such a sweet voice, and we had nice conversations.

I looked for this post below for an hour today, and I just found it while looking for something else! Jersey was different than your girl because she never laid a normal egg, and I didn't really know her age for sure. I traded one of my RIR roos (Nene's brothers) for her. They guy was from CL, but it turned out it lived fairly close to me.

(Nene had congestive heart failure and was full of fluid and waddled. When she could no longer fly up to her special perching spot at the top of the coop, I took her to the vet and ended up having her put to sleep).

This photo was taken because Jersey often faked laying eggs! We joked that she faked so that the other hens wouldn't think she was over the hill. The only eggs she laid were these GROSS ALERT ones on the info page that I had made. If you're brave, you can click to make it larger.

Hopefully your Fayoumi will improve.

For those of you that recall the Peafowl rescue; I have visited the property and will be going on Sunday to try capturing as many as I am able to gather crates/cages for. I won't go into too much detail but any of you love your animals this was a sad sad site to say the least.

The elderly couple have been gone for months now and before the neighbor had realized it several cats were so bad they had to be put down. This is a hoarders home with every out building filled to the brims! These animals need help..so please any type of kennel/cage/carrier that at least a Beagle sized dog to a Great Dane size will help me.

There are roughly 25 birds. Many adults and younger than a year. So varying sizes are fine. If you have them to loan to me that would be the best help I could ask for!!

I would like to have any available crates picked up by Thursday as that is my deadline for confirming a time with the woman I'm working with. I don't want to waste her time if I don't have the ability to crate many on one day.

Thanks for any help!!

PM me a time and place and what you are able to offer and I will be there.
We will mark/label your cage and I will return in 30 ish *quarantine is 30 days* days. If you have to have it back before then please specify and we will make those arrangements also.

I will be in Indy tomorrow.

Thanks!
Mandy

I have a number of cages that I would be happy to loan out for this project. Perhaps I could find a way to get them to you on Saturday?

Is anyone here going to the poultry show in Lebanon a week from Saturday? I have never been and am wondering how bird sales are handled at this show. I just received my Ayam Cemani breeders association card in the mail today - which also happened to be the day that I decided to get out of raising the breed. I am going to focus on breeding the beautiful Ohiki, fibro phoenix, and barred phoenix. All my other birds will be offered for sale and I thought the poultry show might be the best place to find good buyers for them. Any feedback/advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

I have two roosters that could help put someone in the position of a nice little micro business. They are genuine fly tie fowl out if Cy Hyde lines. Breed them to just about anything (with the exception of silkies, maybe) and you can get your own line of genetic hackle chickens going. Market price for hatching eggs is $75 for 1/2 dozen. I can share more specific information about the breed and their unique feathers to anyone interested in one or both of my roosters. I also have two barred Phoenix cockerels with the same gene trait available. Hackle and saddles from these birds sell for a pretty penny to fly tie fishermen.

If anyone here is going to the show, I would also enjoy an opportunity to meet you while you are there. I find that I always enjoy connecting with others personally who enjoy raising poultry.

Tomorrow I am selling my f1 fibro d'uccle project birds, and that takes me another step closer to widdling down my flock to only the breeds I know I want to keep and work with long term. It only took me five years and 30+ breeds to make a decision! And it feels good to finally have that solid direction!
