INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Cluck - Nice to see you back on, even if it was for a short time. Hope everything is well :D

Irtehun - What cuties

Pip - My silkie has been making giant leaps everywhere since he was a tiny thing. Moving them outside he still got into the coop door that was 18"+ off the floor.

Kabhyper - CRSelvey - I too have noticed we are a super friendly bunch on here. Heard a lot of people mention the lack of welcoming to specific threads due to the newcomers lack of knowledge. Shame really. I guess I shall stay here :D

Brad - Stunning birds as always.

Mother - Haha, I can refrain from the upright man birds for my collection. I would be having nightmares about it escaping, getting into my house and me finding it doing something human like, like cooking. *shudders

Jchnny - Wheeeee... a little one. Exciting news. All action on the Jchnny Farm.

Too Fast - I just removed my jerk dominate rooster and the second in line from the coop so Mr SIlkie has stepped up to the plate. He just started crowing the day the other two were removed (before, not after.. go figure). He is handling it well and looks a little more assertive with his stance. Have not noticed any extra volume, think that might be his nature. I guess if you have one that is not so intent on crowing the day away, chances are he will remain that way.

Old Salt - How disheartening to hear the hard work you put in that have some other person slum it up. We currently live in the house we used for a rental, 4 times it got trashed and I was so mad with the hard work we put in it at the start and to have to fix everything every time someone moved out in the middle of the night to skip the rent. I understand the need to vent.

Good morning, folks!

I was hoping someone would know the reference!

Too Fast, I'm not totally sure, but it's been my experience that when you remove one rooster, the less dominant one will step up to replace him. A lot depends on the rooster's personality and age as well. Cockerels tend to go through a phase where they're a bit overzealous with the girls, but they do grow out of it eventually. I have had relatively few roosters over the course of my time chickening, though, so if someone else has any thoughts, that would probably be more helpful.

Thanks you two! I like how this thread has a lot of helpful advice, even if we are not pros at backyard chickens.

Success! We have the chicken enclosure finished and in use:

Next question, they are just over four weeks old now, what's the lowest temperature that they can be exposed to? We're going to have some cool nights and don't want to hurt them.
I would think that this time of year, after they are 4 weeks, they should be alright. I am no expert, but if they are in a coop they should be fine. Less then 4 weeks, probably not ok.

Thanks for the information, I was thinking Rhode Island Reds and orpingtons. Have you heard anything about them?

For the second time, I have had CCL eggs in the incubator, and of 7 eggs I had one hatch. They develop until just before hatching, then don't make it. At least this time, I got a girl.
So that leaves me with a single chick. Does anyone out there have any under 1 week old chicks? I need to find her at least one to hang with.

I used to have 14 RIRs and I dont think I ever got less then 11 eggs a day when they started laying regulary. I dont really know much about Orps. I dont have any because I dont really like them. All the Buff orps I had bad attitudes so I go rid of them. I know there are a lotof people that love tham and say they have great temperments, they just arent the breed for me. I dont know how well they lay, I didnt keep any long enough to find out, once agin not saying they are a bad breed I just dont care for them.

Vigar- welcome. My RIR lays almost daily. As do my Easter eggers. I do have Buff orps and mine have been friendly and good layers. I also have a white leghorn, she was the first to lay from babies purchased this spring, she flighty but is now laying daily. I also have Banty RIR and they lay good too. Do you want to do large fowl or Bantys? Lots of info on BYC and I also have the " pickin chicken " app, which is fun to compare with.

Welcome!! I have both RIRs and Orpingtons. By far my opingtons are the greatest pets. We can pick them up and carry them all around the yard. The RIRs are also social...maybe a little more bossy to my other birds, but like to 'talk' and follow us around.
My orpingtons consistently lay every other day. My RIRs are about every 3rd day. Now I got them all at a year+ so I cannot tell you about their early days.
We are out with our birds every day. Talk to them. Give them treats. Watch them.

So a lot of their personality may have just developed from us as well. :)
