yes those island reds are also excellent layers. Orpingtons are good layers too but they don't beat the RIR. They have a sweet temperament thoughRhode Island Reds?

thanks guys!I agree. Also the 4" side up helps to keep their feet warm in winter.
I wonder what the deal is with the other eggs? For the second time, I have had CCL eggs in the incubator, and of 7 eggs I had one hatch. They develop until just before hatching, then don't make it. At least this time, I got a girl.So that leaves me with a single chick. Does anyone out there have any under 1 week old chicks? I need to find her at least one to hang with.
Welcome!! It is indeed hard to keep up with this thread. Good luck on your girls starting to lay. I also got in to chickens in April, but have since cheated and added older girls. They of course are laying and I know some of my younger girls are laying because my daily egg count is starting to creep up....just not sure who yet. Looking forward to hearing of your success.Joined BYC last week and just found this thread. I am in SE Marion County and I have two white Leghorns and four red Sex-links the we got at TSC in early April. Hoping for eggs any day. I just wanted to introduce myself to this thread. I will try to keep up.![]()
My daughter wants a girl one of these. I'm not caving in yet.Going to get these beautiful chicks tomorrow. Can't wait!!

I have 2 hatchery Barred Rock pullet chicks I can bring Sunday if you are interested.Ok I should know now that you are all so much better at chickens than me but I was hoping you were wrong about my barred rocks both being cockerels. Well I showed the picks on a barred rock thread today and got schooled. He was more wordy than old salt but just as straight forward in telling me there is no chance of a girl. So I have to change my signature again!!! 2 girls and seven boys. I'm dispatching two on Sunday but are the others guaranteed to fight? Is there a chance that they will remain on good terms with each other? Otherwise they are going to freezer camp too.
I was going to ask too.Where are you getting them from? They are BLRW right? I was really wanting one of those!
Edit: Never mind. Just saw that they are from Bradselig.... don't suppose you have any more? With Tansy gone 9 just doesn't feel right... Need to make it an even 10.
Quote: Craigslist has locally hatched chicks this time of the year. Saves you some hatchery shipping.
These can be great chickens. There are 3 kinds of RIR. The hatchery kind is the production RIR. Compared to the Heritage RIR, the production birds are smaller, lighter, different shape and meaner even the hens can be aggressive at times. That said they will lay lots of large brown eggs. The leghorn will lay more eggs in white shells. Production RIR roos are not good around children.Rhode Island Reds?
Then there are Heritage RIR. I recommend you check out the Heritage RIR thread in the breed section for complete info.
There are single comb HRIR and rose comb HRIR. The Rose comb are rarer than the single comb.
Production RIR chicks this time of year should run you less than $4-$5 locally and $3 hatchery but then there is shipping.
Heritage RIR chicks are very hard to come by this time of the year. Most are selling off started chickens with most of those being the boys. I have HRIR single comb roosters I need to sell off so I'm in that group. But I did not get as many females as I wanted so it will be a while before I have any chicks to part with. SC HRIR chicks are at least $8 plus shipping at express rates.
HRIR will be larger birds so good for meat too but they will lay few eggs. The eggs will be larger than the production RIR eggs.
It is a person choice but I'm converting from the production type to the Heritage type. I might keep a couple of productions for a layer flock or to sell chicks on CL. RIR is very popular on CL.
There is a fair in Morgan county next week. The chicken judging is Saturday (tomorrow). If you have time, go and talk to the bird owners. They will all be there for the judging. And asking them questions helps them as much as you. They get asked questions as part of their 4-H judging.
There will also be a Poultry Show in October. I'm sure there will be great birds for sell there that are already laying.
I cant wait until the show in october. And I am definatley going to be buying some chickens. I am putting money back just to spend there lol! There will also be a Poultry Show in October. I'm sure there will be great birds for sell there that are already laying.
2" side up. 2x4's? That's a bit of overkill, huh. Now you can perch beside your chickens. Thanks danand! I've never had sebrights so I wasnt sure. One more question. We just bought a couple of rounded edge 2 x 4s for roosts in our new coop. We have mostly LF but obviously a few bantams. Should we use the two inch side up or the four inch side up?![]()
Thanks for the information, I was thinking Rhode Island Reds and orpingtons. Have you heard anything about them?
