INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well, I'm expanding my quail species now! Just ordered some Texas blue scale quail eggs.
Ooooo! Is the the deep blue with the red on the chest?

I found some OEGBs! I am getting 5 tomorrow. Silver duckwing, so excited. I saw some on ebay but these are just in north manchester. I was going to get a trio for $30 and they said well would you want 5 for $40. I said yes, of course lol. 1 cockerel and 4 pullets and I just bought these 5 hold cage so they can stay in them temproarily (spelling ?). I might hatch some eggs from them, If I do I will let you guys know because I know a few people on here would be interested.
I have a silver duckwing hen, that's a gorgeous color, congrats! My favorite is my Red Pyle hen, she is an absolute sweetheart.

Quote: Not boring at all! I have a hunch we're not the only ones that's curious. We have been researching since last fall. Most of the dairy farms seem to be north or west of us. A good friend up the road, Jack, keeps around 30 or so head. He does mostly holstein. He has one processed for his family then sells the rest on the hoof. He gets his from a dairy but had already got his for this year, otherwise we would have went in with him. I assumed he bred them, he said its too much headache, so he just gets a livestock trailer full of calves every spring.

Quote: sounds good! I will send a PM. My TSC in anderson told me they won't be carrying the 24% anymore, I had been using it. I am going to make some more calls, and I can check Orshlens too in greenfield.

Okay I will! The person sent me a picture and I drooled over them! So pretty, I want silver duckwing and brown breasted red I think Its called, all the varieties are pretty I just like these two the most. In the pic the pullets are up by the fence and the rooster is in the background with his neck feathers flared up lol.

I have two brown breasted red OEGB (AKA bb reds) hens. I love them! I have one that goes broody every know and then. She went broody last month and then stopped and just went broody again last week and today she stopped.

They are blue and have brownish tones on the wings, but not sure if we are talking about the same lol. Here is a link to a few pictures.

I like having broodies, sometimes they get little tempers and you cant help but laugh. I have a hen that will growl at me when I go broody and I just laugh at herr and say awwwwww whoes a mean goose? Goose is her name, but she is a chicken. I have heard they make great little moms and love to free range.

Thanks! They didnt say if they were very social or not, but I would imagine they are too skitish because they were right up by them when they took the pic.

That's what I think too, although it looks a bit like a honey comb pattern up close. (bad pic) Or almost like seeds. It's weird. The egg was cracked so not good to keep. She moved ll of the nesting material and layed it on the floor.
Do you give them oyster shells? If you do I would stop for a while. I have never had this problem, so not exactly sure what it looks like, but thats the first thing that comes to mind. One of my RC brown leghorns lays her eggs on the floor even though there are nesting boxes for her to use. I am going to put easter eggs in the nesting boxes to show her where to lay.

Lol It was in the box. She just scooted out all of the material. If it is my Australorp, she is about 10 lbs. Cluck told me she lays 3 inch eggs. This is her first since she has been here. So far all of our eggs have been in the nesting boxes, except for the soft egg layed from the roost. I do have oyster shell out for them. They free range, so maybe I don't need it. Thanks for your response. I haven't read much of the back posts, but I hope you find your oeg's ( that was you wasn't it?) lol I need to go back and read. This thread is so fast!!!

[replied to jchny] The other thing you have to consider with price when buying a day old dairy calf versus a beef breed calf is how much extra it's going to cost (feed, vaccines, possibly vet bills) you to get that dairy calf to where the beef calf would be when you purchase it.
Sorry, I could go on forever about cows. Feel free to pm me if you want otherwise I won't bore everyone on a chicken thread

Other creatures are welcome on this thread-- We've discussed and posted photos of about every kind of bird and animal-- and we've all learned new things. I don't know much about cows and will never own one, but would like to know more. I was kind of repulsed and fascinated at the same time when I saw Holsteins at the 4H Fair. They are so huge and healthy looking except their hips, back, and shoulder areas are especially angular and bony.

After jchny mentioned that cows are expensive, I was curious and looked on craigslist -- my gosh there are some expensive cows! It's probably cheaper to buy them already packaged in the meat dept. yikes.
