Loved the pics!I don't think I've ever posted a picture of this young guy. He's my oldest Rhodebar cockerel. The Marans roo was NOT happy with him out there. He came charging at him. Guess my time of adding roos to the flock are now one lol.

what a good girl!
The face, I swear looks like some modern game, but I haven't seen one up close.
I dont know either, but I really love the breed. Hoping someone can offer info? Hatchery birds are rarely "heritage" because they have normal traits such as broodiness bred out of them.Who is a good source to buy HRIR from? Are the chicks from Meyer and My Pet Chicken heritage birds?
CRSelvey - Hope you received good news about Sesame!
bradselig - So sorry for your little silkie! I do love the looks of your frizzled Tolbunt Polish. Are frizzled feathers a mutation that you can breed for? Do they occur in all breeds? I have only seen them on bantams; can LF have them, too?
Well, my iMac hard drive is toast! I guess I made too many BYC posts! Luckily, my files are backed up by my Time Machine. Unfortunately, I cannot access them until my IT guy (my son Max) orders a new hard drive and installs it. He has already lectured me about not having my files backed up on an external hard drive, blah blah blah. Not only are important BYC avatars in my files, but also my graphic design job files. Plus, my computer is eight years old, so I really need a new one, but that will cost close to $2,000. My son suggested selling my chickens. That might pay for postage since shipping is free.

I gather my tools and go do stuff. Always forget gloves or good boots to not mess up my feet. i wear flip flops usuallyFull 3/4 " 4x8 plywood sheets really hurt on bare feet![]()

Hi everyone! I have this gorgeous roo (either an Andalusian or Minorca, not sure) that needs a new home. He has recently hit what I call "chicken puberty." My husband didn't want a roo to begin with but I brought him home anyway. He has started chasing my daughters (4 and 6) and they are terrified of him. He hasn't hurt them and I don't think he is overly aggressive, just doing his job looking out for the girls. He only does it if my daughters are chasing the littles around trying to pick them up. Honestly, if they would chase him back, I think he would leave them alone. Anyway, my husband says he has to go. I am in Pekin, IN and am willing to meet somewhere within reason.
Quote: stagnant. Bacteria can grow pretty fast in still water. Also invites parasites/molds and DH told me to watch for the red mold that will develop in hot stagnant water guess its pretty nasty.
I just change all the water out several times a day, and the pools too
lot of good links, thanks for sharing. Awesome news on your broody!Hi everyone. Just wanted to check in, as its been a while. Although I do read every couple of days.
My birds are doing well. My ee who was paralyzed is up and walking, eating and pooping well now. She still gets Super B complex in the water daily. I had 2 birds with ocular changes. One has passed, she flew into my dogs yard, and was sent out for necropsy to Purdue. She has tested negative for mericks disease. The other ocular change chicky went broody on me. I couldn't seem to break her, so I got her some eggs. There are 3 shells with holes this morning as its day 21 today 9 eggs total. Mamma is doing so good. She comes out once a day to do her daily walk, bath, poop and eat. Then right back to the eggs. Mamma and eggs are sectioned off in the coop. And I have a 4x4 hardware cloth enclosure made up for when the chicks can come out with mamma.
I also have my meat chickens coming, they should be here today or tomorrow. So I've been busy setting up brooder boxes for them. I need to work on transforming a shed into a coop for them.
For those of you who have chickens that are not walking. There is lots of information out there. I have done lots of reading. Check out the following threads. It is just for information. I am not saying you have mericks in your flock. But I figure the more prepared we are the better we can be. There is a life after Mericks disease. Even though my ocular bird came up negative for MD, I am still practicing like I have the disease. Its better for my birds safety. Bio security is our friend always.

These are threads started by people like us who have had problems with chickens walking, not eating. Later today, I will post some more reading information that I found or have been shown on MD.
I'm hoping all will be well for those of you who are experiencing the whole not walking thing. Its not always mericks. But the other diseases it could be, bio security still needs to be enforced for them as well.
Shoot, I gotta go, should not have been on this computer this morning. Lots to do today, so I need to get my butt in gear.
Have a good day everyone!

I am so sorry, You did all you could to care for her.I want to thank all those who were concerned about our girl, Sesame.
We took her to the avian vet in Indianapolis this morning, and she believes our assumption of Marek's was correct.
We didn't feel it would be right to make her wait and suffer until we got an appointment at Purdue to make 100% sure.
We had her euthanized there at 11:40 this morning. It seemed like she went peacefully. As peacefully as a creature can. We decided to have it done there because neither of us have ever performed a cervical dislocation, and we weren't too sure about using carbon dioxide as a method.
She was a beautiful butterscotch colored Buff Orpington. She made us laugh. She rocked the coop and run. We miss her, we became too attached (which I guess happens with one's very first 'flock'). We'll be posting pictures of the other girls later and watching them like hawks. We (I) feel we owe it to Sesame.
Thank you again for your concern, it is much appreciated,
Mr Tattoohead

You have a good list, ugh I wont even think about what my eggs costAll these posts of Cream Legbars is killing me. I want one so bad but really don't want to raise chicks again until next fall. Bradselig you better have some eggs ready first thing this spring because I'm gonna be knocking!
Acquisition list for next spring.... CCL, BLGW, & a Blue Standard Cochin. Should round out the flock nicely. I'm sure by that time I'm going to discover some other breeds I want. I only have you all to blame...
On the nesting box topic I currently have golf balls in the boxes. I left the chickens in the run/coop area until about 1 today and will do that for a couple days. Could be they just aren't laying yet. Someday I'll get that million dollar egg.![]()
Awesome news, good luck!So far so good. Ill be recandling in the next couple days but many had veining the last time I candled. Ill keep you posted.
Interesting, let us know how it goes!We have ten chickens and we're filling the waterer about halfway, emptying and refilling every two to three days. We started off with much smaller waterers that sometimes didn't last the whole day.
I got a suggestion about "mosquito dunks" and ordered a few off of Amazon to try them out.
I wouldn't trust her.Well, I just had another up and down afternoon. When I got home and did a check for eggs, I had a surprise. One of the eggs that my broody phoenix was sitting on had hatched! I didn't think there was any way she could do it, considering all the interference from the other chickens, and she is only at 18 days from when I gave her the eggs. From first glance, it looks like it came from one of the Brahma eggs, and it does have feathered feet. The father is probably the Fayoumi, although it has an outside chance that it could be a partridge cochin.
That was the good news. The bad news is that I then watched new mommy try to peck it to death. I rescued it, but its pretty bloody about the head. I put together an emergency brooder, so we'll see how it goes.
Question to more knowledgeable folks (that means nearly all of you...) Should I leave the remaining egg with her now that I have relocated her to her own pen? Or is it that if she will attack one, she will attack them all?

I think you will be fine with your chickens unless they want something on the other side of the fence like another chicken or something they think is a treat. But right now is hawk migration, keep your eyes on the sky and a radio on while you are letting them out, at least until they know to watch for the hawks.
The garden bed looks lovely. The corner posts are great. I'm sure you already know this, but to get off to a great start, lay down a nice thick lining of plastic or weed barrier to kill off that grass. Then a thin layer of sand to help with spring drainage issues. Then the dirt, potting soil in the bags is pricey, but standard dirt is not too bad and you can always add chicken litter in the middle. I hope you get a wonderful garden. You may want to put up 4 t posts and surround the garden with deer netting to keep out free ranging chickens once you get plants growing. I can't get over the corner posts they just look so great.
I have an owl that keeps coming to visit my chicken area tonight. it is walking around our "hoop" / cube coop. There is either netting, tarp, or netting and chicken wire over the entire thing. I'm thinking owls don't dig so it can't get in unless it can get by the poultry netting. Still he is freaking out my chickens and they are squawking causing me to check on them and send DH out to chase away the owl. I would go but I read that the GH owl has attacked humans before so here I sit, typing asking for advice. We tried lighting up the back yard with flood lights and I turned on a light in the coop, still the owl came back after less than an hour. I was thinking since owls are night hunters the light would keep it away. But maybe the light is making it easier for the owl. It is easier for me to check on the birds if the light is on.
We just moved our small pens and large coop tonight so the owl could care less about routine placement.
We also have those blinking red lights, the owl could care less.
