We had been getting 10-12 eggs a day from 14 chickens. We are down to 7-8 a day already. We have one who just brooded chicks. And I agree, the free eggs have got to stop. Especially since I don't get any egg cartons back. Do they really think I'm going to buy egg cartons to give eggs away for free? I actually only have 2 on my counter atm. And I'm down to about 5 cartons. That will never happen again. Now I have to have something else for breakfast. And of course, nothing sounds good. Just eggs!

We are going to my brothers place this weekend for the Notre Dame game. He has a huge blow up screen that he sets up outside, with a projector we watch it sitting on lawn chairs and a beer. We will be having heaters and a fire too. Its a late game and should be cooler. This is the screen he uses. It is pretty dang awesome! It almost like going to the movies.

Wow that's what I'm thinking of for our backyard. Would really love to have something like this for next summer. Something to spend the tax check on!

When I read your post, I was surprised. You have always been a kind-hearted and gracious lady.
Obviously, I was mistaken in my interpretation of your words. Perhaps I should have PM'd you with a "Huh" message before flying off the handle.

Being a joker, I constantly lean toward the edge of propriety. Occasionally, I fall overboard. I usually re-read my postings before hitting "submit" for that reason.

Unless I have poisoned the well, I hope to continue to include you among my friends.

The silkies are still laying, and I think it could be a clutch. I brought the eggs in tonight because it is supposed to get down to 37 degrees. They aren't sitting, so I figured it would be okay. I plan on putting them back in the box in the morning.

So Bradselig if you see this, I have 7 bearded silkie eggs now lol.

I hope I am not messing up anything by bringing the eggs into the house.

so for you that are getting such a setup, are you worried about neighbors complaining? After all it has to be louder than a rooster or dog.

Actually his neighbors get a better view from their house vs watching their tv, and they have friends come over too. So far all of his neighbors think its cool and have not complained. He can set it up to use head phones with it as well. It does put some light out too, but so far for him, no problems with it. He takes it down when hes done and sets it back up when he wants to.

Also, can someone explain the difference between a normal chicken vs a heirloom or heritage breed? I see those terms quite a bit but don't really understand what they are.

And on another note we got egg number 2 today. Same place as the last one, right outside the nesting box. You could tell that someone had been in the nesting box and made a nice little spot, but I guess she decided that wasn't going to work for her. Just about the same size as the first one. We should be home tomorrow and Sunday, so I'm really hoping to figure out who it is.

others have explained the heritage vs hatchery pretty well. I never understood the difference until I saw them first hand at a byc'ers house and his langshans. If I hadn't known better i would have thought his breeders were emus! They were huge compared to the hatchery ones I've seen before. They are definitely on my "Breeds to Own" list. Indiana Girl here! We've had chickens for just less than a year, 23 girls and a roosters. Love the fresh eggs! We also garden lots and live green & frugal - and have even before it was "cool"

Wouldn't my roos fight since my flock is rather small? I'm definitely like M2H when it comes to my birds. They are my pets as much as anything else. I definitely don't want to get rid of Carl, but I'm not opposed to a second roo as long as I wouldn't have to worry about them tearing into each other.

it honeslty all depends on your current roo.

The folks like Brad that hatch chicks know what they are doing and, better yet, what not to do.  They get a much better hatch rate than newbies like us.

From comments I've read on this thread, Crested Cream Legbars are particularly difficult, especially with shipped eggs.  I'm gonna buy chicks.

Buying a dozen $5 eggs and getting one to hatch can make for some VERY expensive poultry, especially when it turns out to be a rooster.

im far from an expert! I have good hatches with most local eggs and some shipped (my only 100% hatch was from shipped eggs) and I've also experience HORRIBLE hatch rates. Even with the horrible hatches, I'm still addicted to it and find it more enjoyable than just buying chicks (which I still enjoy that ok lol).
