Me I'm still waiting on ebay eggs from Southern Indiana. I'm thinking by the time they show up they will be too old to set. Not so sure why the PO can't get them here on time when they are in Indiana.

Kel - That mamma will constantly have those eggs moving and rotating position under herself. They move and turn them quite a bit so they are likely all getting a good heat covering as she does that.

Okay thanks. I haven't looked in there for a few hours. I'm going to leave her be. It's 48 degrees and raining here, so I was concerned about that. I hope the babies get good coverage drying off while the others are hatching.

Yikes! I've had a full week and found myself about fifty pages behind. I only read for the last couple of days; the entire week seemed a bit overwhelming.

Kab and Julie, I'm sorry for your losses. Racin, glad to hear that your hen seems to be improving.

I plan to be at the Lebanon show on Saturday. I signed up for outside sales in addition to my show birds, but not sure whether I have anything worthwhile to sell this time. Sold the last of my Appenzeller youngsters at Lucasville a couple of weeks ago before I even got them out of the truck; may have a silkie or two and a 4-month old peacock. Anyhow, look me up if you're there, always glad to put names and faces together. My truck is a red Dodge Ram with a camper shell.

Newbie question - How does outside sales work? Do people just have their birds in their vehicles and you walk around to see them? I went to Bloomington a little while ago, but didn't realize this was going on.

I'd like to know if anyone on the thread has solar experience.

I'd like to run my already-installed automatic door with solar rather than electricity if possible. I don't know a lot about it, but I think I need to have a panel, inverter, and battery. Just don't know what kind of each of those I'd need and where to get them. It would have to run the timer clock at the right speed 24 hrs.; door motor 2-3 times a day for about 3 minutes at a time.

Anyone have that kind of experience?

If I get that solved, the next thing I'd like to do is run Three 50 watt bowl heaters throughout the winter off solar it it's not cost prohibitive to get the equipment.

Anything is possible, given sufficient funds. Our government demonstrates this daily, with our money. Several sources sell solar setup that will charge a 12v battery.

For the automatic door, you could get by for around $100 for a lawnmower battery and solar array. The doors use very little electricity. You could also charge the battery in your garage and carry it out to the coop. The charge will last for months.

If you have several batteries and a large solar cell array, you could store enough electricity to keep heaters going through the night and through gloomy days.

It would cost several hundred dollars. RacinChickins probably has the most knowledge about the subject. Prepare for sticker shock.

I haven't researched this specifically, but John is right. for something like the door/timer, it shouldn't be too difficult or expensive to work out since you aren't talking much power.

A heating unit is a bird of a different feather. We are talking more power, which means more solar collectors, more batteries, etc...result being more money.

I'm not at the point of needing this yet, but once the winter/breeding pens are completed, I'll have 5+ doors that will need to be managed. It would be a good project to get my feet wet with solar electric. Sounds like something to do during winter......

Well, I won't have to be worrying about chicken math this weekend, but rabbit math is probably going to strike my daughter & possibly my son. We're headed out to Harrisburg, PA for the ARBA (Amer. Rabbit Breeders Assoc.) National Convention. Both of the kids are on the youth Indiana Teams for the Breed ID and Judging competitions. We'll have to decide how many empty carriers we take with us, which will limit the rabbit math that can take place! We're also hoping to work in a trip to the Hershey Chocolate Factory and also to Gettysburg (thank goodness the government shutdown is over since this is a National memorial site which had been closed down.) Hope we'll also see some pretty fall foliage on the trip!

My best friend is going there too! She is leaving tomorrow

Anyone breeding for Olive Eggers? I am but I am looking to obtain a true americauna vs. EE I have 1EE but her eggs are more pale blue.. I did hatch 3 eggs of hers and can only tell one of her offspring because its bearded and at this stage it appears to be a boy. I was getting ready to pair her up again with my BCM boy but thought I'd ask first!

I have a black ameraucana pair that I am wanting to get rid of. If you are interested let me know. They are healthy and everything. The rooster cannot be shown, he would get DQed because of his tail, the pullet could be shown but I would not,she isnt of the best quality, she is molting right now.

Last year their was a pavillion with cages of birds under it. i am not sure if the cages were provided or not. Some people just have them in the bed of their truck near the pavillion or in a little pen on the grass. There was a also someone who had a trailer selling rabbits out of the back of it.
