I might get into trouble here but I will not put ear tags in my goats ears, I'll put them on their collars, I cant afford to tattoo them either. they will live out their lives with me so I don't see the need. any kids I sell I will give the tags to whoever buys them. I have seen too many ears ripped to screeds because of those things, and my goats are very active I can just see them getting into trouble with those stupid things.
Has anyone used the spiral leg bands for chickens? Are they safe? what do you guys use? been looking at them and I don't like the metal ones, seems like they could cut the top of their feet with. The plastic one might be ok but you have to have a special tool to put them on just like the metal ones do.
And I assume we don't have to keep a record of the hatching eggs we sell cause I cant find anything on that. And if we do, how in the world are we supposed to do that?
This all gives me a headache, I know it shouldn't be a big deal, but its just another way for the government to keep an eye on what we do. I have Issues with the government... sorry

I am so excited !!!!!

I found a Blue egg so my last AM hen is now laying

It's so pretty! I feel like a kid again.. lol
and ol'girl laid an egg too, I thought she was done for good. she stopped for a long time and I looked it up to be sure she is 5 years old.
and I got Welie egg today too, not as dark as I hoped but it is speckled, lightly.

So if they (swine) remain for our own use (food) it appears I can "group tattoo."
If I sell any, then they get tagged if I am reading correctly.
Other ID Formats:

Group Identification Number (GIN)

All animals must meet the following criteria:

• For pigs born and raised on the same premises and
• Moving in the group direct to a slaughter facility and
• Not mixed with swine from other premises from birth to slaughter and
• Slaughtered one after another as a group, not mixed with other pigs at slaughter
• Appears on documents moving with pigs; GIN number/tags do not have to be attached to pigs
• May be used for pigs moving within a production system across state lines following various restrictions (contact State Veterinarian for details)

ETA since I slaughter onsite that fits perfectly.
