Infectious Coryza and chickens, Its like a severe cold.

Duramycin10 is on the weak side for coryza. If you are treating coryza, sulfadimethoxine is probably the best antibiotic or Sulmet second, from what I have read.

Not sure if my chickens have infectious coryza, but they are defiantly sick. I hate antibiotics but I put them on sulfadimethoxine today because I don't want to loose any. I had 16 die (some I culled) from this disease in September, super sanitized the coop and yard and got new chicken 2 weeks later. Now these girls are sick. They have all the symptoms of infectious coryza except they never smelled (even the last batch). As far as I know the only vet in the area that deals with chickens is well over an hour away. Any thought on what it could be? I really hope the antibiotics work! This is getting really expensive and the guy I got the sick chickens from stopped the outbreak with tlyan 200. Advice is appreciated!

16 died but were there some remaining or was that all there were? You say the guy you got the sick chickens from stopped whose outbreak? Yours or did his chickens get sick? I have read in multiple places that you should leave the pen and grounds vacant for three months before repopulating with new birds. I would see about sending one to be tested to find out for sure since this is the second time you have had to deal with this. Unfortunately respiratory issues may seem to get better but they are actually ticking time bombs that come back again later. You can't cure them. If you bought birds that had a respiratory issue from someone then you brought it to your place with the birds.

I had 16 and all 16 died. I decided to cull the last few and start over. I thought a good sanitation would be enough as that was what I was told by the ag lady at the local university. Not the best advice.

What I didn't realize and shocked me was that bleach does not disinfect soil. Dirt causes it to be ineffective. You have to clean the items before you bleach them and you can't clean dirt. Supposedly the disease lasts only a few days outside of the bird but then they say to let the ground lie empty for various periods of time...I've seen from one month to a max of three. I'm going for three.

Thank you! The site helps quite a bit. I medicated their water and at this point we are keeping the chickens. I have 9 silkie chicks though that have not been introduced to the flock and I will give then the vaccine.

Can you eat the eggs from a bird who has coryza if you have not started any medications. I suspect my chickens have all been exposed to coryza. If I cull them, are they safe to eat??? I have 25 chickens and I am so sad!!
