I grew up in the Starving Seventies, a stick of butter, a bottle of syrup, and some tortillas would have been cause for celebration.

When I think about the coming times, I figure I've been through the Seventies so there's nothing new I'll have to face.

BTW God bless you for helping out your friend.

Mom was just talking tonight about what they did back in the day.

Her dad said no need stock piling a lot of food, it is just going to go bad anyway or not be worth eating. They made sure they had feed for the animals and a couple weeks worth of most everything else.

Friends and neighbors spent all they had on stock piling, they knew it was just a matter of time til that is all they would have.

When Germany swept the country in WWII and occupied the farm, they did okay. They did have a few animals die of "Natural Causes", the Germans would never touch that meat....so they had plenty. Enjoy mom even smuggled it to relative (hidden in her girlie garments in her suitcase....a little blushing and oh dear you want to see my panties...and they would blush and let her pass)

When you are stock piling, give thought to how you might use and process the food if all you had where hand tools and a camp fire.....and if it would be worth eating

It's quite worrying how many people really distrust the government. I don't mean distrust them to do a good job, because I think, all around the world, people feel let down by their governments' ability to deal with ever growing national debt, and the banking crises. I see however, that some people have real fears that their government no longer has their best interests at heart. Do people really believe that a freely elected government, with two houses of parliament, could ever for example, confiscate food, and privately owned gold? If that ever did happen, would not the people march on parliament and cause such national backlash that they would bring down the government? It has happened over and over again in countries all over the world, and not just third world countries. In France for example, every time the government tries to impose another regulation on farmers, there is marching through the streets of Paris and blockading of the ports. The roads are blocked by two mile an hour farm machinery and everywhere is in complete chaos. Then the government backs down! In Britain, Margaret Thatcher imposed a Poll Tax and the resulting fury of the people brought her government to the edge. She was forced to abandon the idea!! Real power is with the people

The French are awesome. General Strikes are what it's called. I could go on and on about all the various ways they kick butt, and it would take pages and pages. We Americans have largely inherited a disdain for the French from the English, but the truth of the matter is, the English deriding the French is like the day I got my new Schwinn Sting-Ray and was proudly riding it down the street, and Mike Noise yelled at me: Where did you get that hunk of snot?!? He was JEALOUS.

Our government is run by 2 political parties whose main focus is retention of power rather than doing what is best for our country. Since I can't change that I work on my self sufficiency and food stores regardless of how much of a nut case people feel about me.

We talk about sharing what we have with neighbors and friends if things get bad. But some of them will tell at least a few of their neighbors and friends and before long you're efforts will be gone and wasted and you'll be in the same boat as them. If it gets to the point where there are major food shortages then it isn't about karma, it'll be about survival.

Really? The French workweek is a whopping 35 hours, retirement was less than 60. Coombine that with all their other nany-state issues and it is simply unsustainable. They were rioting fiercely last month because they might have to work until 62. GASP! Americans who don't "like" France usually do so b/c they feel France is snobby. But I certainly don't think jealousy factors is.

That is 100% no wait 1000% correct in my opinion. The only thing missing is the huge ego that they have.

I can sure understand that Kristy. The thing is that even though the Native Americans were here first. They were considered to be invaders and would have all been slaughtered if it was up to a lot of people. To me, the Native American situation is a bigger stain on us than slavery.

Too bad the American people don't have the same fortitude as the French and British. They thought the Tea Party was special. Unfortunately it ended up getting a bunch of people in that want to make class disparity much worse than it already is into positions of power. Now that the sheepskin has been removed to show the wolves for what they are it may change. You know how this country is though. They live sound bite to sound bite.

Real power is with the people. We saw it in 2008. Unfortunately those people didn't bother to come out in 2010.
