Inflation

You should have your pay checked out if you got a tax increase. Nobody has gotten any tax increases in this country. At least not at the Federal level. Might be a great leader at the local level.

Good luck.

What's a raise?
What is this HEALTH INSURANCE you speak of?

I predict it is only going to get worse, much worse.

I wish you were wrong...but you're not.

The REAL US unemployment number is over 20% if you calculate it the same way unemployment was calculated in the 70's and 80's.

The REAL US inflation rate is almost 10% if you calculate it the same way inflation was calculated in the 70's and 80's.

Food is just going to get more an more expensive. There are so many worldwide disasters that have occurred in the last few months that will force prices to climb. The earthquake/tsunami/nuke problems in Japan are just the icing on the cake.

I am preparing for hyperinflation.

Geez, it's really tough for alot of folks right now. Every time I go to the grocery I get more frustrated for the people who are trying to raise families and eat healthy. Just awful! Luckily, we're empty-nesters and do ok for ourselves. This year though, I think we'll get with our kids/parents and plan on getting meat from the local meat processors - Will be less expensive and not packaged in nitrogen. Can probably do that with some beef, chicken and pork if we plan right. When I was little, dad would bring home washtubs of beef. The men went drinkin while the women wrapped the meat. It's time for me to get back to more family-based canning and freezing. I don't have any place for a garden, but will have to buy at local farms.

We switched to Costco for groceries and saved $400 the first month. I was shocked. I need to do raised bed, but am a little intimidated because I have a black thumb.

we dont even spend $400 on four people for food a month. how did you save $400? what do you eat?

We most certainly did have a tax increase. Federal taxes change at the first of every year. This year I take home $17 per paycheck less than 2010.

And this is why I'm glad we're continuing to expand our garden. WifeZilla, I agree - with Mr. Bernanke in charge at the moment, hyperinflation seems pretty inevitable. The feds are downright dishonest with the way they count unemployment and track inflation.

I need to get more chickens.

Not every place in California get rain regularly all year long so the grass/alfalfa stays green.

Many parts of California are "irrigated desert" If the farmer has to pay $$$ for water and more $$$$ for fuel to send their hay 300 miles to market and $$$ for fuel to harvest it, it might cost more than a place where the rain falls regularly and hay is plentiful.

why would alfalfa cost this much? its 3-5.00 here mostly $3.50 where do you live?

I have never ever seen it that cheap here. I live in the High Desert of SoCal. The cheapest it has been was $6/bale about a year ago. It slowly increased to $8.99 and then BOOM $16.99 - craziness!!!

If it were just me and KEn we would spend about $250 a month on food. We have a 3 year old bottomless pit, and healthy food costs ALOT more than processed, and three young adults in the house, and one of THEM is pregnant. So yeah, we go through ALOT of food. Factor in that I live in SoCal, where everything is more expensive.....
