oh and don't forget child welfare, all those darn free loading socialist loving orphans sucking on the government teet.

oh and the police department and fire department, payed for by the government from tax payer money to protect the people and the common good. technically socialist.

not all "Socialist" style programs are bad and it is possible to be "a little bit socialist" in other words to like some aspects of a certain ideology and not like other aspects of it. It's called not being an extremist

that is unless you're against orphans having homes, children getting an education, having roads, and protection from criminals and fire.

Psst... Most of that stuff can be privatized with relative ease. Public education is, was, and always will be ineffecient, and abused by the government to make mindless drones who support a massive omnipotent state. Private and home schools do better across the board.

Roads - highways, at least - can be privatized. There are numerous examples of successful private highways, and they're ALWAYS more effecient.

FDA? Don't get me started. Unconstitutional waste of money that can't even do its job.

Welfare generally is NOT the domain of the government, least of all the feds. Charity should always be taken care of by churches, individuals, and charitable organizations. Not the government. And don't even try to give me a guilt trip by using children - if private organizations and individuals were the sole source of charity, everyone dependant on charity would be better off, including the children.

Police and fire services are technically the legitimate domain of local governments.

Also, the FDA is technically not socialist, just an unconstitutional piece of ****. Socialism is the forcible transfer of wealth from those who earn it to those who do not or cannot. The FDA is (in theory) a government service for our "protection." As are police and fire services, which are significantly more legitimate.

In short, if the government didn't provide most of these things, we'd still have 'em - and they'd be more effecient as well! I think the problem is that most people (sorry if this sounds insulting, but it's true) only think one step ahead. Make a conscious effort to think two or three steps ahead when looking at economic issues, and you'll be well on your way to a much better understanding of the way an economy functions.

Were you drunk? I always wondered what you would do if the elevator got stuck and you had to go. Designate a corner I guess.

Well, now we know what those stains are on the elevator carpet.

So far, this has been an interesting exchange of ideas, with exception of the peeing.

Let's hear some good suggestions about how we can get out of this pickle.

That is the 64 dollar question. I really do not know what will work. Our history is always a good lesson. If the government wants to do something they need a super project like a dam or major highways or some other infrastructure project that makes sense and I do not mean those GREEN nonsense projects like painting rocks grey or more subsidized wind turbines which are not running here in the Northwest because we are having record runoff of our snowpack and the hydros are spilling water because they cannot use all the power, they are turned off as a result.

I am more in favor of the private sector getting going but investors are very cautious right now and I feel they are waiting it out until a different administration takes over, it is not in any one's best interest to be considered rich by the current administration and their tax czars.

A better highway to Alaska would be nice maybe drill for some oil in the U.S. territories and states. I really believe putting people to work not extending unemployment benifits is part of the solution.

And no I was not drunk just had to go real bad and all the floors had locked doors to keep all the vagrants out, no public restrooms.

Well, if the government is going to spend more money, I think it should be on something that benefits the country. How about a system of canals, pumping stations and siphons to take the excess water out of the Mississippi River at flood time and transfer it across the country to fill our reservoirs and alleviate the drought in the west.

I am sure those folks in Louisiana, Arkansas and Missouri wouldn't miss all of that flood water.

How would we finance that? Well in the first place, let's eliminated foreign aid to those countries that hate and despise us. That would go a long way to start the project.

I see where President Obama wants several billion dollars for aid to Egypt, Tunisia and other Middle Eastern countries. Forget that! I think they might be able to handle their own bills now.

We could eliminate that old "Food for Peace" program, under which our government buys grain in the US and gives it to foreign governments to sell on their market to gain revenue to run their governments. That grain would make great gasahol, and we could cut our imports of foreign oil.

When those people that hate us so much feel their bellies rubbing their backbone, maybe they won't hate us so much.

I think people in Pakistan and Afghanistan need to raise more wheat and less opium poppies.

And about those windmills, that is such a boondoggle. T. Boone Pickens wanted to build the largest windfarm in north Texas. Unfortunately, he ran into such a mess of government regulations and requirements. By the time the transmission lines would have been completed, we all would have been dead of old age. The requirements for impact statements and studies would have lasted longer than World War II.

It was mission impossible.

have you considered getting a higher education? I may disagree with a lot of what you say but you are obviously quite intelligent and could do well in any education you choose. You can continue in the job you choose, there is nothing wrong with pursuing education for education's sake, chickened.

How many billions have been spent to battle poverty? Has it been "cured" yet? How many more billions would it take to make it go away? May, just maybe, throwing money at it isn't the answer???

There you go.

Some thinking on ending the mess. I think the idea about the Miss is a great idea. Obama has been trying to get money spent on infrastructure since he got in. I agree that painting rocks is kind of stupid as well as a lot of other silly programs they have.

Cutting foreign aid sounds great but then we wouldn't have any friends. As long as we keep sucking down oil at the rate we are, we need to have our foot in the door over in the Mid East. If we don't do it, the Chinese will gladly do it and then we will have 20.00 a gallon gas. That would put a serious dent in the recovery. I know we could drill and suck all the oil in ANWAR and North Dakota for another 800 days worth of oil. So we would be set for 2 years anyway. So I don't see them cutting aid over there regardless of who sits on the throne.

Big business will do the research if they are well subsidized. None of them are willing to shell out the bucks to research new ideas anymore. It all has to be subsidized through government grants. The tax policies have nothing to do with it. They can't wait another 6 years for the administration to change.

As for Pickens. i would like to know the real reason why he didn't go through with his plans. As usual the government and all their onerous regulations is used as the scapegoat. Pickens has been in the business his whole life. He knew exactly what would be required to get the job done down to the day and the penny. Somebody threw a wrench in his plan somewhere by backing out or not taking a bribe. Things are NEVER as they say.
