Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you'll always have a fishing buddy on the weekends. We all know how it really goes.

At some point people need to be accountable for their position in life. I've worked with people who have worked their way out of the projects of South Chicago into good meaningful careers. It is hard but it is not impossible. I have no problem spending tax dollars on helping people get ahead in life but it has to start with them. all handouts do is bring more birds to the feeders.

That's right there is a BIG difference between a hand up and a hand out.

That Mississippi project sounds good, unfortunately the greenies would litigate it to death.

Desalinization plants in California would be nice so they would not have to use their sewer water ( prescription medicines cannot be filtered out) for potable water.

As for foreign aid that can be done by closer neighbors.

ANWAR has more oil than the middle east as there are over 1000 test wells and the wells in Texas and Oklahoma are refilling not to mention the Gulf and how many foreign wells are there? Obama said earlier this year that we could buy oil from some south american country that he visited and where do you suppose that country is drilling? yep, the gulf.

We have too many NIMBY's in this country.

"Cutting foreign aid sounds great but then we wouldn't have any friends."

Mmmm. Some friends! It's a bottomless pit. Question: Is it better to be loved or feared? Right now, it appears we are neither, despite decades of foreign aid.

Are you sure they are our friends? I am not a pot head but there was a saying in highschool "a friend with weed is a friend indeed". I think that is the type of friends we have as a nation most do not like our liberties but do like our free money.

So what is your solution? Send all the poor people to China so they can make stuff for American companies? Poverty is caused by people not working due to a number of factors. A big factor is too many unintended kids. Yet the people that are against helping people are also against BC for those same people. The other problem is lack of education. Their solution, get rid of schools.

I agree that throwing money at it is not the answer. If people won't hire them and they have no food or housing what do you think they are going to do? The only answer is job training and providing jobs. While their at it quit trying to shut down the only source of womens health and BC that they have because 2% of their money is used for something you don't agree with. Money that was not collected through taxes. Then you might not have so many women with 5 kids to feed and house that could never find a job to pay for daycare let alone food and housing.

Teach them how to fish and they can feed thousands as they say.

Do a tiny bit of research before you make a statement like that about ANWAR. ANWAR has at a high estimate around 11.8 billion barrels of oil. Saudi Arabia has 91 billion barrels. That's just Saudi Arabia. The US has 1.7% of the known world reserves of oil. That includes ANWAR, west coast and The northern plains.

There's a reason why we've been sinking so much money into the region. I know all the pundits on the right have been spreading BS to make their listeners believe Obama is wasting money ion the Mid East. Fact is that if the current POTUS had an R behind his name they would be praising the same actions. It's one of the biggest obstacles this country faces. people listening to pundits instead of doing a little research.

Sorry Chickened, I wasn't clear. I was responding to Dunkopf's comment, ""Cutting foreign aid sounds great but then we wouldn't have any friends." I would cut and run foreign aid like a miser, as in "my money, my rules." I always seem to be in a hurry on here.

You would also have a lot of parked cars and silent factories in your country. Then you would have invaders taking your country because you wouldn't be able to defend it.

Uh, I think you missed the gasahol idea. We probably could do without the Middle Eastern oil if we did that.

And about the "friends" in the Middle East, maybe if people would stop cheering for the "Arab Spring" and listen to what those people are saying, they would think twice about that "friends" idea. "Death to Israel" and "Death to America" is pretty easy to translate.

When I said friends I was being generous with the word. I know they aren't our friends.

As for the gasahol. Yep I saw that. I would like to see some government figures on what we are capable of producing, while still feeding our people. It's a good idea and could certainly be used as a bridge until the alternative energy cars have better battery technology and they find a way to make nuclear more safe. I know nuclear is very safe right now but the potential for extreme problems is still very high. Notice I say potential.

Look at Ethanol right now. The farmers are getting nice subsidies for growing the corn. They have switched alfalfa fields over to corn fields because it can be done very easily from what I hear. Not a farmer so don't know specifics. At any rate alfalfa is very hard to come by now and is needed for milk cows and milk goats. A lot of horses like it too. So we're kind of robbing Peter to pay Paul.

The real solution to so many of our problems from global warming to the Middle East is to get off oil. Too bad that Reagan didn't continue Carters policies on that. We could be weaned from the Mid East by now if he had and future Presidents had followed suit. Hindsight is always 20/20.
