I have a neighbor with a small backyard flock. One of their chickens has an injured foot and mostly lays down.
I went over to look at it and got some pictures.
I want to help this chicken because these people are not properly taking care of her.
They are starving her and providing no water or shelter. (They took her out of the coop and she’s basically just a “sitting duck” waiting to get eaten by a stray dog or fox. I will add I wine over today while they were off on an errand and put some food and water down for her. She ate it up so fast like she hasn’t seen food in days!
I have offered to take her off their hands and I’m hoping they will come to their senses and allow it.
In the mean time I was hoping to see if anyone here as any ideas of what this could be.
She doesn’t seem to use it but she gets around when she needs to.
I noticed a red bump and wasn’t sure if it was an infection?
It also looks like she could have the beginning stages of scaly leg mites but I’m not 100% sure.
Any feedback would be super helpful :)

You want to be really careful, because you don't want to get in legal trouble. I tried to look up if there were animal cruelty laws that protect chickens, but I couldn't find anything clear, and I think it varies from state to state either way.

If I were you I would raise some money with a go fund me or something similar and offer to buy her. They may even sell her to you for cheap since she needs medical attention. Money really talks for some people.

The rebel in me wants to say to just take her in the middle of the night since they don't seem to care anyway, but you want to find out exactly what legal ramifications can befall you. Just paying them would be a way better bet that it won't escalate into some ensnaring legal battle. People can be so crazy out there.

Maybe you can call and animal cruelty organization and they can help give you legal advice? I know of one in Vermont. What state are you in?

I don't have a lot of experience with foot injuries, but that looks treatable to me.

She does have some scaly leg mites from the raised scales, in addition to her injury. Smearing vaseline on her legs and feet and rubbing it in twice a week may help smother the mites. Do they have other chickens they have treated the same?
I have no idea what their other chickens have been treated with if any at all. I took a look at them and they didn’t look like the healthiest bunch. A lot of poopy butts.

Ok so a little update:
My neighbors let me have the chciken!!
I took her home and drew up a warm Epsom salt bath for the hurt leg and scaly leg mites. While she was soaking I noticed poultry lice all over her. I mixed vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spray her down all over because I do not have poultry lice and more spray on hand (heading to the feed store today to get some)
If anyone has any recommendations on getting rid of lice please let me know. I have not had this issue with my 24 chickens and I’m going into this ready to learn something new and useful to help this sweet hen.
I’ll post a pic of her after her bath with an updated foot picture.

I also want to add that I asked the neighbor how long the issue has been going on and they said 3 weeks.
She’s around 3 years old as well.

I treated her with garden and poultry dust (permethrin) and then wiped her legs with
Chlorhexadine and Vetrx and then lathered them with Vaseline.
I made an enclosed area in my patio with a dog kennel but even with her hopping on one leg she kept hopping over the puppy pen I put around it 😂
I put a chicken wire top on it so she can’t do that anymore.
While I was dusting her down though I noticed something on her skin on her back and I’m not sure what it is.
If anyone knows what this is or if anyone has any idea why she is pulling her leg up close to her body please let me know :) thank you

That is most likely her preen gland which secrete oil for her to groom herself. Repeat the permethrin dust in 10 days to get the newly hatched eggs. Check her again a in 10 more days for lice or eggs. Be sure that they are gone and that she is healthy before integrating her into your existing flock. A wire dog crate with food and water is a good way to slowly introduce her, so that she doesn’t get beat up.

Thank you I appreciate your help!
With her leg is their anything that I can do to help her? They said it’s been going on for 3 weeks now.
She just holds it up to her body and hops around. I can’t seem to find any outward injury.
