Injured Goose

I'm going to take him outside and put him in the pool again. Figured exercise will do him some good. I don't think sitting in the crate is much help. He has never been handled before so my guess he won't eat from my hand. He is very quiet, not a peep. I am worried if he doesn't eat. I'll keep trying till I find something that he will like.

It could be possible he got into a scuff with a Muscovy. She does have some of those around her pond. Those boys are pretty darn big. I only have 1 gander for my 3 girls. Maybe one of the girls will perk him up a bit. We will have to see what happens. Thanks for your help. Any type of feeding ideas you have let me know and I will try them. I may make a wet mash and force feed him if he keeps this up for much longer.

Have you tried some scratch? my goose loves corn also, I don't over indulge him in stuff like this but to get this guy to start eating, but maybe out being around your girls will perk him up...
The only things my gander will eat other than Flock Raiser is romaine lettuce, w/w bread and scrach that has alot of corn in it. I get Homestead 7way scratch.and red grapes but only halved he won't eat them whole unless they are small..

Don't worry too much about feeding him. Geese tend to be quite fat, so they can go for days without eating. Give him access to whatever is his normal food and maybe top dress it with a few kibbles of dry cat food. He can eat if he wants it, but it is not important for him to eat.

If he won't eat, put a pinch of sugar into his water and make sure he drinks. I am not so sure about electrolytes because they usually contain salt and salt is bad for poultry.

Cleaning him up was a good idea.

He doesn't have an impaction, because he pooped. So that is not a problem.

I think all you can do is keep him from chilling, make sure he drinks so he doesn't get dehydrated, and give him time to heal.

He got a bath alright. I kept him in one of the pens with some hay and fresh water. I did put him in the pool for exercise. If he fell he'd fall in the pool which is fine. He still can not stand and he got dirty in the pen from rolling around and of course found a spot to get stuck in. So, off to the sink for a bath. He seemed to like the bath. Boy, they sure do soak up a lot of water. To much for a towel and get this, I could ring out his feathers! I sure did, I squeezed those feathers and out poured water. Too funny, who would have thunk it?

After trying to towel him dry I broke out the hair drier. Yep, he liked that too. I feel I'm running a goose spa. He drank but still won't eat. So force fed him some strawberries and he did eat a layer pellet or two. He feels a bit thin to me. I can actually begin to feel the breast bone which I don't think it a good thing. He is still very stiff. He won't open his wings to stretch or anything. He's like a beach ball with legs just kind of falls over and rolls around. I don't understand the stiffness and can't stand part.

I think her nose hurts. He doesn't like sticking his face all the way in the water. Since he had a bloody nose I'm guessing it still hurts. Are you suppose to be able to see through the nostrils of a goose? From one side to the other is what I'm talking about. The nostrils are still pretty rough looking so I firgured that might be what's making the right eye look a little off. He hasn't blown his nose in the water that's why I ask.

He's now resting all cleaned and dried and a tiny bit of food. I'm really stumped why he can't stand let alone walk and why he won't open his wings. I can move and open them but they close right back up. Strange. Hopefully I will see more improvement tomorrow.

Ok, this goose is pooping green. Does that mean anything? I'm sure it can't be good. He hasn't eaten any grass at all. I got a few pieces of cut up strawberry into him and today I force fed him more. I made a mash and also force fed him that as well.

I had him outside today and he did try to get up and walk. Since he was in the house and standing ok on the floor figured it would be nice to get him out in the sun and fresh air. When he did get up he ran trying to control himself. Needless to say he crash landed each time. Finally I took him back inside before he could kill himself.

Maybe it's from not eating. Maybe he does have some internal injuries I hope not. Seems I read if they don't eat though they will poop green. At least he was able to get up and try though isn't that a slight improvement?

Yes, I feel that is an improvement. He doesn't like apples so I will stick with the strawberries since they are easier for force in his mouth..... lol. He was up and running but crashed bad each time. I finally brought him in before he hurt himself. Now, he just have to adjust his speed and get some balance. He did use his wings today. Better then he was yesterday. I made a shake for him so that will be his food tomorrow. This will be interesting and I'm sure really really messy.

How about a goose bib? have you tried grapes? my gander loves grapes, but I have to cut them he won't eat them whole.. Sounds like your making progress with him, your a good dr.

Thanks Miss Lydia. I think I like it when he just stands up rather then running uncontrollably like a drunk bird. The mess he makes rolling around in the dirt when he crashes is terrible..... lol. He's not grooming himself either which is sort of odd. I put him in the pool this morning after I force fed him. Apparently the strawberries didn't go well with the shake I made him. After feeding him that he spit the strawberries out.

He did pretty good in the pool. Instead of fast forward he took his time and dabbled on the bottom of the pool which was a good sign. He also was blowing his nose a bit which I felt was another good sign. Nope, I didn't put him down on the ground again I rung him out, put him in a towel and off I went to put him in the crate. I figured he could clean up better in there and dry off at the same time. So far I just hear some rolling around. Progress is slow but good.
